Chapter 8 - The Red Folder
Megan had collected screenshots, photos and notes about Tyler.
Not because she hated brother.
Because she was afraid of him.
Not physically for herself.
Afraid where cruelty was going.
Red folder contained:
Photos of stolen fundraiser cash.
Messages mocking Emma.
A list of “dares” Tyler and Jason gave younger kids.
Most childish.
Some dangerous.
One:
Dock lesson.
Then handwritten beside it:
JASON SAID NO.
Again Jason had resisted at first.
Then later:
JASON AGREED IF TYLER DOES IT TOO.
So both culpable.
Then Megan’s most disturbing note:
Mom knows.
What did Allison know?
She knew Tyler had been threatening Emma.
She had confiscated his phone once.
Found dock messages.
What did she do?
She told him:
If I hear one more thing, you’re grounded all summer.
Not police.
Not Sarah.
Not school.
Why?
She believed boys bluffing.
Negligent.
Then she deleted screenshots from her phone after Emma died.
Why?
Fear they would look like she knew danger.
Which she did.
Could that be obstruction/evidence tampering.
Investigated.
Then red folder had copy of voice memo recorded by Megan three days before dock.
Megan to Tyler:
“If you touch Emma again, I’m telling Dad.”
Tyler:
“Dad won’t care.”
Megan:
“Mom will.”
Tyler laughed:
“Mom already knows.”
Sarah stopped.
Allison had been more aware than admitted.
Then Allison confessed Tyler told her:
“We’re just gonna scare her at lake.”
She replied:
“Stay away from that kid.”
Why not warn Sarah?
“I thought that was enough.”
Not enough.
Then red folder contained something nobody expected.
A juvenile probation intake document.
Tyler had previous sealed incident.
He had pushed another younger child into shallow pool eleven months earlier.
No serious injury.
Case diverted.
Sarah stared.
Judge had said no prior violent convictions.
Technically true.
But prior diversion existed.
Was judge informed?
Juvenile prosecutor had record but diversion protected/confidential with limited use.
Could still matter for risk assessment depending law.
Then Jason had prior school discipline for holding another child underwater “as joke.”
Now pattern.
How had both boys ended up together with Emma?
Their parents knew enough to supervise.
Didn't.
Court injustice began looking partly systemic.
Then Rachel warned Sarah:
“This still may not be what’s in envelope.”
Inner envelope itself remained sealed in evidence because court ordered testing before opening? By now can open eventually. But story structurally delay until chap15 via conditions. Could say envelope included key only in outer section; final wax-sealed packet not opened because sender’s note indicated authenticate chain first and there was legal concern. For story suspense, investigators image inside: papers + memory card but no read yet due motion. Fine.
Then forensic imaging showed final packet contained:
One memory card.
One notarized statement.
One photograph.
Who notarized?
Seal visible through scan.
Hale County Notary.
Judge’s surname?
Robert Hale.
Coincidence.
Then Rachel searched.
Notary was Eleanor Hale.
Judge Robert Hale’s wife.
