Chapter 7 - The Man Across the Water
Marcus Reed had been repairing a small dock on opposite side.
Cell location confirmed.
Line of sight?
Yes.
Would he see shove?
Possibly from 180 yards.
Binoculars found in truck.
Marcus admitted he watched boys near Emma.
But said he looked away before shove.
Then why lie about being there?
Liability.
If he admitted presence and failure to intervene, civil exposure.
Also Jason.
He wanted protect son.
Then a fisherman came forward.
He had seen Marcus standing with binoculars just after splash.
Shouting.
What?
Couldn’t hear.
Then Marcus called Jason immediately.
Phone log.
Duration 23 seconds.
Before Sarah reached Emma.
Jason answered while dock.
What did Marcus say?
Jason:
“Dad told me to get away from water.”
Sarah stood.
“Not help Emma?”
Jason cried.
“He asked if she was swimming.”
“And?”
“I said no.”
“What then?”
“He said call 911.”
Did Jason?
No.
Tyler knocked phone down?
Jason claimed.
Witness did see boys arguing.
So Jason’s behavior more complex than remorseless laughter image.
But he still shoved Emma initially.
Why?
Peer pressure not excuse.
Then Marcus’s voicemail to Jason after:
Don’t say anything until I get there.
Again parental panic.
Then Rachel found civil records.
Marcus had been sued five years earlier after teenager drowned near another marina property.
Case settled.
He became obsessed with liability.
That explained immediate instinct to control narrative.
Not evidence he planned Emma’s death.
Then anonymous envelope note handwriting was compared with Marcus.
No match.
Allison.
No match.
Megan?
Partial similarities but inconclusive.
Jason?
No.
Tyler?
No.
Then key had trace of glitter.
Silver craft glitter.
Where used?
Elementary-school art room.
Emma’s school.
Maybe sender was teacher.
Sarah remembered Emma’s teacher, Ms. Parker, had seemed strangely silent after death.
Police interviewed.
Ms. Parker broke down.
Emma had given her a sealed note two days before death.

Monday never came.
Ms. Parker forgot amid tragedy.

Jason told Emma not to go.
That complicated culpability.
But Saturday he still participated.
Why?
Then Jason confessed:
Tyler threatened to tell everyone Jason had stolen from his father.
He went along.
Not excuse.
But dynamic.
Then one final line in Emma’s note:
Megan says she has the proof in the red folder.
Red folder.
Everyone looked at Megan.
She went white.
“What red folder?”
Sarah asked.
