Chapter 28 - The Laboratory That Was Supposed to Be Empty

Federal agents reached St. Gabriel first.

The laboratory had been abandoned for seventeen years.

No electricity.

No active fire system.

No Julian Cross.

The message appeared to be bait.

Then Lily noticed lights beneath the basement door.

Backup generators.

A hidden archive still running.

Inside were refrigeration units, servers and sealed document cabinets.

Not forgotten.

Maintained.

Someone had paid utility bills through shell companies for nearly two decades.

Julian had preserved the evidence he claimed he might destroy.

Claire understood why.

Powerful people rarely destroyed records proving their importance.

They hid them where only they could decide when they mattered.

Agents secured the building.

Julian Cross was arrested two miles away attempting to enter through an old service tunnel.

No chase.

No gun.

No dramatic escape.

An old sick man carrying an oxygen concentrator and a briefcase.

Claire saw him through glass at the federal building.

She felt disappointed.

Not because she wanted a monster.

Because monsters were easier.

Julian looked ordinary.

Thin.

Tired.

Afraid.

He requested to speak to Claire and Lily.

Claire refused.

Lily surprised her.

“I want five minutes.”

“You owe him nothing.”

“I know.”

That was why Claire allowed it.

They sat across from Julian with attorneys, Ben and a child advocate present.

Julian looked at Lily.

“You have Thomas's eyes.”

Lily said nothing.

“I knew your embryo before anyone knew your name.”

Still nothing.

Julian seemed uncomfortable without gratitude.

“I made decisions that would not be permitted today.”

Claire nearly laughed.

“They weren't permitted then.”

Julian looked at her.

“There were fewer options.”

“You transferred an embryo into me without telling me.”

“Yes.”

“You used another woman's biological material.”

“Yes.”

“You concealed the father.”

“Yes.”

Julian's voice broke.

“But you have your daughter.”

Claire stared at him.

That sentence revealed everything.

To Julian, outcome justified consent.

A living child transformed violation into gift.

Lily leaned forward.

“My sister died.”

Julian looked down.

“That wasn't caused by me.”

“No.”

Lily surprised everyone.

“You're right.”

Claire looked at her.

Lily continued.

“Tyler and Jason caused what happened at the dock.”

“Adults around them made it worse.”

“Michael used us.”

“My dad lied.”

“Project Tern hid things.”

“You did something different.”

Julian looked up.

“You decided people shouldn't get to choose what happened to their own bodies because you thought the result might be good.”

He had no answer.

Then Claire asked why he hired Michael.

Julian frowned.

“I didn't.”

Claire looked at Ben.

Michael said biological father hired him.

Thomas admitted hiring Michael.

That part was true.

But who ordered Michael to bring the girls together at the dock?

Thomas denied it.

Michael had told Grace “Uncle Michael” could help reunite the family.

Someone fed Michael the idea.

Julian?

“No,” Julian said.

“I didn't know which children were Reeve's until after the lake.”

Claire studied him.

She believed that particular sentence.

Because his ego made him confess almost everything else.

Then who?

Margaret?

Adam?

Richard Brooks?

Michael himself?

Ben reopened Michael's original payment records.

The first deposit came from Thomas Reeve.

For surveillance.

A second payment arrived forty-eight hours before the lake.

Different account.

Michael had always assumed Thomas arranged it through an intermediary.

The account belonged to:

NORTH HARBOR MEDICAL ETHICS PROJECT.

Margaret's nonprofit.

Claire stared at Margaret through the video call.

Margaret went completely still.

“Margaret?”

“I didn't send it.”

Only three people had account authority.

Margaret.

Thomas.

And the organization's treasurer.

Claire looked at the archived board list.

Her chest tightened.

Treasurer:

ADAM DAWSON.

The second payment had been authorized using Adam's credentials.

Two days before Grace died.

Lily whispered:

“Dad paid Michael to bring us together?”

Claire could not answer.

Then Julian began laughing softly.

Everyone turned.

“What?”

He looked at Claire.

“You still don't know what Adam was trying to do.”

Claire's patience snapped.

“Then tell me.”

Julian smiled sadly.

“He wasn't trying to hide the truth that Saturday.”

“He was trying to end every lie at once.”
