Chapter 6 - Jason’s Locker Key
Jason denied key was his.
Recreation center records proved otherwise.
He had volunteered in equipment room and was assigned locker 214 briefly the previous summer.
Key never returned.
So key belonged to Jason.
How did Emma’s recorder end in his old locker?
Allison claimed she used locker because thought unassigned.
Possible coincidence?
Or she knew Jason connection?
She said no.
Then Jason broke.
His lawyer arranged statement.
After dock incident, Tyler called him that night.
Tyler had Emma’s recorder.
Jason told him destroy it.
Tyler refused.
“Why?”
Jason said Tyler wanted to keep it because “it made her sound scared.”
Sarah nearly became sick.
Trophy behavior.
Then Allison found it.
Unknown to boys.
So Jason’s key in envelope likely came from someone who knew old locker assignment.
Who?
Recreation administrator.
Megan perhaps.
Marcus Reed.
Then Jason admitted he had key duplicate.
He gave one to Tyler months earlier.
They used empty locker to hide stolen snacks and small items.
So Tyler knew.
Now scenario:
Tyler’s family hides recorder in exact locker Tyler/Jason already used.
Could Tyler retrieve later?
He was in custody/under supervision.
Maybe not.
Then prosecutor searched locker deeper.
Behind metal panel:
A phone.
Old prepaid burner.
Fingerprints partial.
Messages to number saved as J.
Could be Jason.
Texts:
SATURDAY SHE GOES IN.
J: TOO DEEP.
T: THEN SHE’LL LEARN FAST.
J: DUDE
T: STOP BEING A BABY.
That looked devastating.
Jason insisted phone wasn't his.
Forensics connected “T” device to Tyler through Wi-Fi at Brooks home repeatedly.
Tyler’s attorney challenged ownership.
Fair.
Then message morning of death:
J: I’M NOT PUSHING HER.
T: THEN WATCH.
If authentic, Tyler may have been primary aggressor, Jason accomplice/witness.
But video prompt shows both shove.
Could story later reveal Jason eventually joins.
Then another:
T: MAKE HER THINK YOU’LL CATCH HER.
J: NO.
At 3:12 p.m.:
J: THIS IS BAD
No later texts.
Sarah thought she finally had secret evidence.
But this wasn't envelope content.
It came from locker triggered by envelope.
Could be major but not final.
Then prosecutors reopened disposition hearings and considered more serious juvenile charges depending jurisdiction.
Still minors.
Sarah wanted prison.
Rachel warned her:
“Justice may not look like adult prison.”
Sarah hated but listened.
Then Tyler’s father Andrew approached Sarah outside court.
“I need to tell you something about Jason.”
“What?”
“Tyler wasn't laughing after Emma went under.”
Sarah stared.
She remembered.
He had been laughing while she struggled.
Witnesses agreed.
Andrew said:
“At first.”
Then Tyler panicked.
How did Andrew know?
Tyler told him.
He claimed Jason was the one who kept laughing.
Was Tyler shifting blame?
Likely.
Then Andrew said:
“And Jason’s father knows exactly what happened because he saw it.”
Sarah froze.
“Marcus was there?”
Andrew nodded.
