Chapter 12 - The Conversation Before Saturday
Audio came from Emma’s recorder.
A file investigators initially thought corrupted.
Enhanced.
Marcus:
“You two stay away from Emma.”
Allison:
“Especially near water. She can’t swim.”
Tyler:
“We know.”
Jason:
“We’re not doing anything.”
Allison:
“I mean it, Tyler.”
Tyler:
“Fine.”
Then after adults walked away, Tyler whispered:
“Now we know exactly what scares her.”
Sarah stopped playback.
That sentence changed intent.
Jason responded:
“Don’t.”
Tyler:
“Saturday.”
There.
Planning.
Then Jason eventually agreed later.
So juvenile case was no longer spontaneous prank.
Prosecutors could pursue more serious adjudication under relevant law, possibly transfer considerations depending jurisdiction, age and charges—but story need not get legal technical unrealistic.
Then Sarah asked why this wasn't discovered sooner.
Because recorder file was damaged and mislabeled.
Linda knew because Emma told her she had recorded meeting.
She hadn't told police.
Again silence.
One adult after another.
Then prosecutor reopened full case.
Judge Hale recused.
New judge appointed.
Tyler and Jason detained pending proceedings under juvenile system.
Sarah expected relief.
Instead grief.
Emma still dead.
Then revenge temptation.
Civil attorney suggested suing parents, marina, school.
Sarah did file targeted claims—not to become rich but force disclosure and fund water-safety/bullying prevention? Could be.
But she refused performative revenge against minor siblings.
Then Tyler requested to speak through restorative process.
Sarah refused initially.
Later read written statement.
He admitted:
“I wanted Emma scared because she got me caught stealing.”
He still minimized?
At first.
Then:
“I knew she couldn’t swim. I thought she would grab dock.”
Not murder intent perhaps, but reckless knowing harm.
Jason statement:
“I knew it was wrong before I did it.”
Powerful.
Then Linda’s final packet still contained unopened notarized paper and photograph? We’ve surfaced. Need preserve one last secret in envelope. We can have hidden folded insert not seen on scan due lining.
Forensic examiner discovered double layer in envelope.
A second microSD card.
Linda didn't know.
Who put it there?
She swore she didn't.
Envelope had been in her locked art cabinet for months.
Who had access?
School maintenance.
Principal.
Megan volunteered?
Then Sarah noticed blue star.
Linda had drawn it?

Linda froze.

So blue star truly Emma’s.
But double lining may contain something Emma herself hid.

Emma’s handwriting:
FOR MOM IF TYLER SAYS I FELL.
Sarah broke down.
Her seven-year-old had prepared evidence before going to dock.
