Chapter 4 - The Father Who Kept Quiet
Andrew Brooks denied sending envelope.
But he admitted something else.
Tyler confessed to him the night Emma died.
Not full confession.
One sentence:
“We only meant to scare her.”
Andrew asked what that meant.
Tyler said they were going to push Emma into shallow water and pull her out.
A prank.
Except dock water was twelve feet deep.
Emma couldn’t swim.
Did boys know?
Andrew believed Tyler did not.
Sarah disagreed.
Emma’s swimming fear was well-known at community pool.
Then Jason’s text messages surfaced.
Two days before death:
TYLER: SHE WON’T RAT AGAIN AFTER SATURDAY.
JASON: WATER?
TYLER: LOL
That looked worse.
But could mean anything.
Then Andrew admitted he deleted one message from Tyler’s phone before police arrived.
Why?
“I panicked.”
“What message?”
He claimed not remember exact words.
Lie.
Forensics recovered.
Tyler to Andrew:
Dad I think she’s dead.
Andrew replied:
Don’t text anything else.
Then deleted.
Obstruction?
Possibly.
He later cooperated.
But envelope sender?
Porch footage body size could match Andrew.
Yet phone location placed Andrew home across town.
Unless left phone.
No proof.
Then Megan revealed why she suspected father.
He had a cream stationery set.
Red wax seal.
Blue thread? Her mother sewed.
Could all match household.
Police searched with consent/warrant.
Found identical envelopes.
Wax.
No blue thread.
Andrew insisted he did not send.
Then forensic wax composition.
Not same.
Megan wrong.
Another lead dead.
Then Jason’s family entered.
His father, Marcus Reed, had been vocal:
“It was an accident.”
He gave interviews.
Blamed unsafe dock.
Blamed lack of lifeguards.
Never blamed boys.
Then investigators discovered Marcus owned marina maintenance company responsible for dock inspection.
Now conflict.
If dock itself unsafe, Marcus faced liability.
Did that influence narrative?
Maybe.
Inspection records showed missing warning sign:
DEEP WATER — NO SWIMMING.
Removed three weeks earlier for replacement.
Never reinstalled.
That could matter civilly.
But boys physically shoved Emma.
Still.
Then Sarah’s grief became rage at system.
Everyone had reason to call tragedy accident.
Parents.
School.
Marina.
Juvenile defense.
Then prosecutor showed her one frame from dock security camera.
There had been camera.
Sarah thought no video existed.
Police originally reported camera was nonfunctional.
Actually storage drive failed.
Data recovery firm restored fragments.
One frame:
Tyler behind Emma.
Jason looking toward shore.
Another:
Emma in water.
Missing sixteen seconds.
Exactly shove.
Convenient.
Could be corruption?
Data expert said physical drive damage caused gaps.
No evidence deletion.
Sarah hated how reality kept offering ambiguity.
Then inner envelope scan revealed not USB.
A small brass key.
A handwritten number:
Storage locker?
Hotel room?
School locker?
Then Sarah remembered.
Emma’s school cubby number had been 214 the year before.
