Chapter 1 - The Laugh After the Verdict

Emma Miller never learned how to swim well.
Sarah had promised they would practice again that summer.
There would be no next lesson.
Tyler Brooks and Jason Reed were already behind Emma on the dock when everything happened.
Two hands.
Then four.
A violent shove.
Emma flew backward.
The splash sounded smaller than Sarah would remember it.
Emma surfaced once.
One pale hand struck the water.
Tyler laughed.
Jason leaned over the edge.
Sarah screamed.
“EMMA! HOLD ON!”
She ran.
Jumped.
Swam.
By the time she reached Emma, her daughter’s body had gone frighteningly still.
Sarah dragged her toward shore.
“Emma!”
Nothing.
“Please!”
Nothing.
Sarah held her seven-year-old daughter against her chest until strangers pulled them apart.
Then came ambulances.
Police.
Funeral flowers.
Court.
Tyler was thirteen.
Jason fourteen.
The juvenile court hearing lasted less than Sarah expected.
Their attorneys described immaturity.
Impulsiveness.
Peer pressure.
No prior violent convictions.
The judge looked sick when he spoke.
“They’re minors. No prison.”
Sarah stood.
“That’s it?!”
The courtroom blurred.
Then Tyler and Jason walked past her.
Tyler glanced sideways.
Smirked.
Jason whispered something.
Both laughed.
Sarah felt something inside her break.
“And my daughter gets NOTHING?!”
Silence.
Then Sarah did something even her attorney had not expected.
She laughed.
Not because anything was funny.
Because suddenly she understood what had been sitting inside her handbag all morning.
She pulled out a sealed cream envelope.
Tyler stopped walking.
Jason didn’t.
But Tyler did.
Sarah saw his eyes hit the envelope.
His smile disappeared.
“You need to see this.”
The judge frowned.
“What is that?”
Sarah looked directly at Tyler.
He had gone pale.
That was when she knew.
Whatever she had been mailed the night before—
May you like
Tyler already knew it existed.
And he was terrified she would open it.
