Chapter 21 - The Man Whose Name Was Removed

Claire did not follow the red boat.
Every instinct told her to.
Eight years earlier, she would have run toward anything that promised an answer.
Now she had Lily beside her.
That changed the calculation.
“Evidence first,” Claire repeated.
Lily looked across the lake where the old boat had vanished around the reeds.
“You're getting annoyingly good at that.”
Claire almost smiled.
Ben retrieved the envelope from the opposite dock while another officer photographed the boathouse.
Cream paper.
Black triangle.
Blue star.
Together.
Inside were three objects.
A photograph.
A medical consent form.
And a plastic identification badge so old the laminate had yellowed.
The photograph showed Claire twenty-three years younger, lying in a hospital bed beside Adam.
She recognized the room immediately.
Not Lily's delivery.
Years earlier.
A fertility clinic.
Claire stopped breathing.
“We went there for six months.”
Lily looked at her.
“You needed fertility treatment?”
“Adam and I had trouble conceiving.”
Claire had forgotten how much she hated that waiting room.
Pregnant women smiling from advertisements.
Doctors promising percentages.
Adam squeezing her hand after every negative result.
Eventually Claire became pregnant naturally—or that was what she had always believed.
The consent form carried both their signatures.
PROCEDURE CYCLE 4B.
Claire frowned.
“We never completed a fourth cycle.”
Ben examined the lower page.
Several sections had been blacked out.
One remained visible:
DONOR MATERIAL AUTHORIZED BY SPOUSE.
Claire's face changed.
“I never authorized a donor.”
Lily said nothing.
Claire read the line again.
Authorized by spouse.
Adam.
Her dead husband had signed.
The third object was the employee badge.
ST. GABRIEL REPRODUCTIVE MEDICINE.
Name:
DR. THOMAS REEVE.
Claire had never heard it.
But Ben had.
He immediately searched the archived Project Tern records.
Thomas Reeve appeared seventeen times.
Not as a founder.
Not as a researcher.
As a whistleblower.
Twenty-two years earlier, Reeve accused St. Gabriel's fertility laboratory of mishandling donor samples and using reproductive tissue outside the scope of patient consent.
The complaint vanished.
Settled confidentially.
Reeve left medicine.
Then disappeared from public records.
Lily stared at his old photograph.
“He looks like me.”
Claire didn't answer.
She had already noticed.
Same narrow chin.
Same slight asymmetry around one eye.
Not proof.
But enough to make her afraid of proof.
Ben's phone buzzed.
Michael's supplemental confession had arrived.
Two pages.
Michael admitted Thomas Reeve hired him eight years earlier to photograph Lily and Grace together.
Not to blackmail Adam.
To prove both twins were alive.
“Why would their biological father need proof?” Claire asked.
Ben kept reading.
His expression changed.
“What?”
“He didn't know where they were.”
Michael claimed Reeve had spent years searching for two children identified only by medical codes:
4B-A.
4B-B.
Lily whispered:
“Us.”
Claire looked at the fertility form again.
Cycle 4B.
A cold possibility formed.
Adam had not simply hidden Grace after birth.
His deception had begun before Claire was pregnant.
They returned to Safe Harbor.
Forensic staff examined the envelope.
The handwriting belonged to neither Michael nor Rebecca nor Hannah.
But the woman at the red boat had left fingerprints.
Ben ran them.
A match appeared.
Dr. Margaret Reeve.
Age seventy-four.
Retired embryologist.
Thomas Reeve's older sister.
Claire stared.
“The woman at the lake.”
Ben nodded.
“She worked at St. Gabriel too.”
They obtained an address.
Empty.
But inside Margaret's house investigators found a wall of photographs.
Claire.
Adam.
Lily.
Grace.
Rebecca.
Hannah.
Michael.
Even Ella.
Twenty-three years of one family documented by strangers.
Claire felt violated all over again.
Then Lily noticed something strange.
Every photograph of the twins had one corner cut away.
Except one.
A hospital photograph taken minutes after their birth.
Two newborn girls.
Two bracelets.
INFANT A.
INFANT B.
Behind them stood Adam.
And beside him—
Thomas Reeve.
Claire moved closer.
Thomas wasn't looking at the babies.
He was looking at Adam.
Adam looked furious.
On the back Margaret had written:
ADAM LEARNED THE TRUTH AT 4:17 A.M.
HE MADE THOMAS SWEAR CLAIRE WOULD NEVER KNOW.
Lily whispered:
“What truth?”
Claire turned the photograph over.
May you like
Below the first sentence was another.
THOMAS WAS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE THE DONOR.
