Chapter 13 - If Tyler Says I Fell
Emma’s voice:
“Mom, I’m sorry I didn’t tell you.”
Sarah covered face.
Then:
“Tyler says if I go to dock he’ll give back the fundraiser money and stop.”
So Emma went to retrieve stolen money?
Tyler had stolen fundraiser cash.
She wanted prove.
Then:
“Jason said he’ll make sure nothing happens.”
Jason had promised protection.
That made betrayal worse.
Emma:
“I’m recording because Megan said grown-ups need proof.”
Seven years old.
Already learning adults needed evidence before believing.
Sarah’s grief turned into fury at everyone who failed.
Then recording later on dock.
Footsteps.
Tyler:
“Give me recorder.”
Emma:
“No.”
Jason:
“Just give it, Emma.”
Emma:
“You said you’d help.”
Jason:
“I am.”
Tyler:
“Stand there.”
Emma crying:
“No.”
Tyler:
“You want your mom fired?”
Then Jason:
“Tyler, stop.”
Tyler:
“Push.”
Jason:
“No.”
Then scuffle.
Emma:
“Don’t!”
Tyler:
“Do it!”
Then two impact sounds.
Splash.
Recorder remained on dock.
Tyler:
“She’ll grab it.”
Jason:
“She’s not!”
Tyler laughs nervously.
Jason:
“Help her!”
Tyler:
“Your dad’s coming.”
Jason:
“Emma!”
Then Sarah’s scream approaching.
This audio captured almost everything.
Why had Emma’s recorder final file not been on device?
Because memory card had been removed.
By Emma before dock?
No, card contains dock audio.
Recorder had internal memory plus microSD.
After incident someone removed card.
Who?
Linda found envelope pre-made? Could card somehow get there after? Need logic.
Megan arrived at dock shortly after ambulance? Records show she came with parents later.
Jason could have removed card and later given Linda?
Then Linda admitted one more truth.
Two days after Emma’s death, Jason gave her tiny card.
“Mom, hide this.”
She never listened.
She was afraid.
She slipped it inside Emma’s craft envelope she planned to use later.
Then forgot exact placement.
So yes.
Jason preserved evidence instead of destroying it.

Guilt.
He wanted truth survive but lacked courage to confess.
This softened him without excusing.

Why did Tyler smirk after first verdict if he knew envelope might exist?

His reaction perhaps not to envelope itself, but red wax.
Tyler had seen that envelope before.

Megan told her to prepare “proof envelope.”
Tyler saw and mocked her:
“Who’s gonna believe a little kid?”
He recognized blue star and wax.
So when Sarah raised it in court, he knew it was Emma’s.
He thought it might contain recording.
That caused fear.
Then Sarah asked:
“Was Tyler’s smug laugh at court remorse-free?”
Maybe defensive bravado.
But still cruel.
Then new proceedings neared.
Tyler’s attorney sought plea.
Jason separately negotiated cooperation.
Sarah had to decide whether support transfer to adult court.
Her revenge instinct said yes.
Emma’s audio said something at very end, previously missed.
After splash, Jason screamed:
“Tyler, jump!”
Tyler:
“I can’t swim either!”
Sarah froze.
Tyler couldn't swim.
He had pushed Emma into deep water while being unable to rescue.
Jason could swim moderately.
Why didn't he jump?
Marcus’s shout from opposite side:
“JASON! STAY THERE!”
Father stopped him?
Enhanced audio suggested Marcus shouted name.
Jason obeyed.
That may have cost seconds.
Marcus thought staying out preserved safety/liability?
Terrible judgment.
Now adult failures directly intersected.
Then Sarah realized her revenge target had become too narrow.
Two boys caused Emma’s death.
But web of adults enabled, minimized, concealed.
