Chapter 11 - Jason’s Confession
Not police confession.
A video.
Recorded by Linda the night Emma died.
Jason sat on bedroom floor sobbing.
He did not know phone recording at first.
He said:
“Tyler made me push too.”
There.
Both boys shoved Emma.
“Why?”
“He said if I didn’t, he’d tell Dad I stole the money.”
“What money?”
Jason stole $300 from Marcus’s toolbox months earlier.
Tiny compared to stakes.
Fear of father’s reaction led him to follow Tyler.
Not excuse.
Then Jason said:
“We thought she’d come back up.”
Linda:
“You knew she couldn’t swim?”
Pause.
“I knew she was bad.”
There.
Knowledge.
Then:
“Tyler said she’d grab dock.”
But shove sent her too far.
Then Jason admitted laughing.
“Tyler laughed so I laughed.”
Why?
“I was scared.”
Then after Emma sank:
“I wanted to jump.”
“Why didn’t you?”
“Tyler said Sarah was coming.”
Then:
“He said if we touched her we’d get blamed.”
Cowardice.
Then Jason confessed something else.
“Tyler had done it before.”
Prior pool incident.
He knew pushing kids into water was dangerous.
Then Linda stopped recording.
Why not tell police?
Marcus returned.
She showed him.
He took phone.
Deleted file.
Linda had cloud backup.
She kept.
So Jason’s confession was final envelope memory card.
Strong evidence.
But Chapter 15 secret still bigger.
Because prompt asks crucial evidence to convict two youths. We can reveal confession earlier partially but final packet has more.
Then notarized statement.
Allison Brooks.
Linda had obtained copy through Eleanor Hale?
How?
Allison once confided during parents’ support group and gave Linda copy asking advice because Linda worked with children.
Linda kept.
Statement admitted Tyler’s dangerous behavior.
Then photograph inside packet?
Linda refused tell.
“That's the part that changes everything.”
Why not tell now?
Because she promised someone.
Who?
Emma.
Impossible? Maybe photograph from Emma herself.
Linda explained Emma had come to art room one week before death and asked Linda to keep picture “if Tyler lies again.”
Linda didn't understand.
After Emma died, she looked.
Photograph showed dock.
Tyler.
Jason.
And an adult.
Marcus Reed.
Taken days before death.
Marcus had been with boys at same dock.
Why?
Practice?
Marcus had warned them:
“Stay away from deep edge.”
That could prove they knew water depth.
But not bigger.
Then Linda said photograph back had Emma’s handwriting:
Mr. Reed told them I can’t swim.
There.
Jason’s father told boys Emma couldn’t swim before death.
How did he know?
Emma had fallen off small kayak during recreation trip. Marcus helped her and heard Sarah explain.
So both boys knew explicitly.
Could elevate culpability.
But Tyler’s attorney would challenge child note.
Still.
Then Sarah asked:
“Is that the biggest thing?”
Linda shook head.
“No.”
“What is?”
“There's another person in the photograph.”
Someone partly cut off.
A woman.
Allison Brooks.
Tyler’s mother.
Both parents had been at dock days before.
Then why?
They held intervention.
They confronted boys about bullying Emma.
At the dock.
They knew boys were targeting her near water.
And still allowed them unsupervised there Saturday.
This was enormous parental negligence.
But not evidence they planned crime.
