Chapter 17 - The Child Claire Never Took Home

Claire hung up only after Ella promised to call again.

Ben did not ask if Claire had another daughter.

He knew better.

Claire answered anyway.

“No.”

Maya sat across from her.

Claire stared at the school ID.

“I gave birth once.”

Ben asked carefully:

“Any pregnancy complication?”

“Emergency C-section.”

“When did you first see Lily?”

Claire remembered.

Bright hospital light.

Pain.

Her husband Adam crying.

A nurse placing Lily beside her.

Hours after surgery.

Not immediately.

Claire felt cold.

“No.”

Ben understood.

“No what?”

“I didn't see her at delivery.”

They requested archived hospital records.

The first digital file showed a single birth.

Lily Dawson.

Then Ben found a scanned operating-room log.

Two neonatal bracelets had been printed.

Infant A.

Infant B.

Claire laughed once.

“No.”

Neither Ben nor Maya spoke.

“This is administrative duplication.”

“Could be,” Ben said.

Then another record appeared.

Twin gestation noted at thirty-two weeks.

Claire stopped breathing.

She remembered the ultrasound appointment.

The technician going quiet.

A doctor coming in.

Adam taking her hand.

They had been told there was a vanishing twin.

One fetus had supposedly stopped developing.

Claire had grieved briefly.

But doctors said the surviving baby was healthy.

Lily.

The operating log contradicted that story.

Two live births.

Infant A:

Female.

Infant B:

Female.

Claire's vision blurred.

“What happened to the second baby?”

Transfer order.

Emergency neonatal care.

Destination:

St. Gabriel Pediatric Center.

Authorization:

Adam Dawson.

Claire stood.

Her husband had been dead five years.

Stroke.

Unexpected.

No long illness.

No chance to ask.

Maya whispered:

“Maybe the baby didn't survive.”

Claire wanted that to be true.

Not because she wanted a child dead.

Because the alternative meant Adam had kept a living daughter from her.

Ben searched death records.

No unnamed Dawson infant.

No matching certificate.

Then he found a guardianship filing sealed twenty-four hours after birth.

Temporary guardian:

Rebecca Morgan.

Claire stared at the name.

Ella's mother.

“Why would a stranger take my baby?”

Ben searched.

Rebecca Morgan had worked at St. Gabriel.

Pediatric respiratory therapist.

Daniel Morgan's sister.

Claire felt the pieces tightening.

But nothing fit.

Then Ella called again.

Claire answered immediately.

“Ella, let me speak to your uncle.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“He says you'll call police.”

“Your uncle disappeared from an investigation.”

“He says he had to.”

“Where is your mother?”

Silence.

“Ella?”

“My mom died.”

Claire closed her eyes.

“When?”

“Last year.”

That matched the timing of Ella entering Safe Harbor.

“Why did you come to my foundation?”

“Mom told me to.”

“Why?”

Ella began crying.

“She said if anything happened to her, I had to find you.”

Claire's heartbeat changed.

“Ella… how old are you?”

“Eleven.”

Too young.

Not Claire's missing twin.

But maybe—

“Did your mother ever talk about Lily?”

“Yes.”

Claire gripped the phone.

“What did she say?”

“That Lily was my sister.”

Claire went completely still.

Maya covered her mouth.

Ben leaned closer.

Claire forced herself to breathe.

“Ella, did she say biological sister?”

“I don't know.”

“Did she say who your father was?”

“No.”

“Did she ever mention Adam Dawson?”

Long silence.

“Yes.”

Claire felt sick.

“What did she say?”

“That he was sorry.”

Ben looked away.

Claire understood the implication before she could reject it.

Adam.

Rebecca.

Ella.

Maybe Rebecca had not simply been a guardian.

Maybe she and Adam—

Then Ella said:

“My uncle says you're thinking the wrong thing.”

Claire almost laughed through the shock.

“Apparently your uncle knows me very well.”

“He says my mom never slept with your husband.”

“Then how could Lily be your sister?”

Ella whispered:

“Because Mom wasn't my first mother.”

Claire felt the room disappear around her.

“What?”

“My birth certificate was changed.”

Ben immediately began searching.

Ella continued:

“Mom said I was born with another name.”

“What name?”

The girl hesitated.

“Grace.”

Claire's stomach tightened.

“Grace what?”

Before Ella answered, a man's voice came over the phone.

“Enough.”

Daniel Morgan.

Claire stood.

“Bring her back.”

“I will.”

“Now.”

“Not until you understand why Rebecca hid her.”

“You don't get to decide that.”

“No.”

Daniel sounded exhausted.

“Your husband did.”

Claire's voice hardened.

“My husband is dead.”

“I know.”

“Then tell me.”

Daniel paused.

“The second baby born beside Lily didn't die.”

Claire closed her eyes.

“She was taken to St. Gabriel.”

“Yes.”

“Rebecca raised her?”

“For three years.”

Claire's mind raced.

Ella was eleven.

Three years younger than the lake case timeline.

No.

The missing twin would have been the same age as Lily.

“Then Ella isn't her.”

“No.”

Claire whispered:

“Who is?”

Daniel answered:

“That's why I'm calling.”

Claire's pulse jumped.

“The girl was called Grace Dawson.”

“Where is she?”

Silence.

Then:

“She died at the lake.”

Claire stopped breathing.

“No.”

“Not Lily.”

May you like

Daniel's voice cracked.

“Someone buried the wrong child.”
