Chapter 9 - Beneath the Living Room

No one smashed floors.
Daniel obtained plans.
Old vault entrance lay beneath rear foundation, inaccessible after renovation.
Modern scan showed small cavity still existed.
Before excavation, Elena asked Diane:
“What did Grandpa leave there?”
Diane denied.
Then Elena showed scan.
Diane whispered:
“He promised me.”
“What?”
“A box.”
Arthur told Diane before death there was one final box she would receive after repaying Elena.
She never repaid.
Box remained.
Diane spent years believing it contained bearer bonds.
How much?
Arthur once joked:
“Enough to make honest people dishonest.”
Diane built mythology around sentence.
Stephen knew.
Michael knew.
Ryan knew.
That was why Michael bought property.
To secure vault before Stephen or Diane could access.
Why not open?
Legal ownership of contents uncertain.
Could belong estate/trust.
Michael wanted court authorization.
Then died before resolution.
Elena’s crash left house vulnerable.
Diane moved in.
Not solely to help.
She was searching.
Elena felt sick.
“While I couldn't walk?”
Diane looked ashamed.
“I did help with babies.”
“You complained every minute.”
“I still helped.”
“You were looking for money under my house.”
Diane cried.
“I thought it was mine!”
There was core.
Everything became hers in her mind if she wanted it long enough.
Excavation under supervision opened vault.
Inside:
No cash.
No bonds.
One steel box.
Diane laughed hysterically.
“That’s it.”
Box required mechanical key.
Timer device fit indentation.
So bomb casing was indeed vault key housing.
Michael and Stephen had designed hardware around original Bell locking mechanism.
Daniel inserted without activating timer.
Vault box opened.
Inside were documents.
Share certificates.
Old ledger.
One sealed letter for Diane.
She tore open.
Arthur wrote:
Diane, if you're reading this before you repaid your daughter, then you have once again chosen possession before responsibility.
Her face collapsed.
No treasure for Diane.
Certificates belonged Elena trust.
Estimated current value?
Daniel calculated.
Potentially another $14 million.
Elena now controlled wealth exceeding $40 million.
But final ledger showed something worse.
Arthur had tracked withdrawals.
One after his death.
$900,000.
Authorized using Diane’s credentials.
Date when Diane was hospitalized for surgery.
She could not have signed.
Someone had been stealing under her name too.
Diane was guilty of much.
But not everything.
Signature witness:
Thomas Morgan.
May you like
Elena’s dead father.
Fourteen years after his death.
