Thomas was dead.
Daniel obtained death certificate, police report, burial record, DNA-supported kinship from stored family sample? No need dramatic impossible survival.
Diane had lied.
Why?
To frighten Elena into not activating device.
When confronted, Diane broke.
“Stephen told me to say it.”
Why would Stephen?
To buy time.
Stephen disappeared before investigators could re-interview.
Now he looked more culpable.
But Daniel tracked money.
Stephen had recently transferred $2.1 million into restitution escrow for Elena.
Why return money if fleeing?
Could be guilt.
Could be strategy.
Then Ryan found Michael’s old notebook.
One page:
S.V. lies when afraid.
D.M. lies when ashamed.
R.M. lies when loyal.
E.M. lies to herself.
Elena frowned.
“What do I lie to myself about?”
Ryan didn't answer.
Michael had written:
She thinks Diane’s cruelty started after Arthur died. It didn't.
Elena remembered childhood differently.
Diane had been affectionate.
Fun.
Unreliable, yes.
But not cold.
Then Evelyn’s archived diary changed picture.
Diane had postpartum depression after Elena’s birth and serious financial instability later. Arthur frequently intervened.
Important: not excuse.
But cruelty evolved from resentment, shame and entitlement.
Then hidden fact:
Arthur planned leaving significant assets directly to Diane too.
He changed will after discovering she took Elena’s custodial funds.
Diane lost her own inheritance because of her actions.
For decades she blamed Elena.
“You got what should have been mine.”
That explained resentment toward daughter’s wealth.
Then Michael’s bomb note:
If your mother ever tries to take the house, start timer.
Not if she is mean.
Not if she asks for money.
Specifically house.
Why?
House itself mattered.
Daniel ordered title history.
Land once belonged to Arthur Bell.
Elena hadn't known.
Her suburban house sat on parcel Arthur bought in 1980s.
Michael deliberately purchased it from unrelated owner years later.
Coincidence?
No.
Michael knew.
Why?
Original Bell estate records showed underground utility easement and decommissioned commercial vault beneath old foundation area.
Vault?
House was newer, but parcel previously contained Bell Records Storage.
Arthur stored paper certificates and bearer instruments there.
Most removed decades ago.
Maybe not all.
Diane knew.
Her obsession with house suddenly changed meaning.
She wasn't only trying to obtain property.
She believed something remained underneath it.
Then Elena remembered timer.
Bomb-shaped device.
A house.
