Chapter 26 - Owen’s Other Family

Harper vomited in the downstairs bathroom.
Not because she understood the ultrasound.
Because she didn't.
Twelve years before her pregnancy.
Owen's handwriting.
One of them must never find Harper.
Samuel stared at the image for a long time.
Then sat down.
“I know what that is.”
Harper turned on him.
“You're going to tell me everything.”
Samuel did.
When Owen was twenty-one, before meeting Walter, before infiltrating the Sloan family, before any assignment involving Harper, he had been engaged.
Her name was Claire Bennett.
Noah Bennett's older sister.
Harper remembered Noah.
One of the eleven keyholders.
The man currently missing.
Claire became pregnant.
Twins.
Owen believed they were his.
Then Claire disappeared after discovering Samuel was alive and connected to the lattice investigation.
Weeks later, Owen was told Claire and both babies died in a highway accident.
No bodies were returned.
Closed-casket funeral.
Harper almost laughed from horror.
“Does anyone in this story actually stay dead?”
Samuel looked ashamed.
“Owen spent years asking the same question.”
That search was how he found Walter.
Not because Walter recruited him first.
Because Owen believed Walter knew what happened to Claire.
The photograph of Owen and Walter suddenly made sense.
THE FOUR FOUNDERS had been taken after Owen's supposed withdrawal because he had continued working with Walter to find the missing family.
“Were the twins alive?” Harper asked.
Samuel looked at the ultrasound.
“One was.”
Harper felt the room narrow.
“And the other?”
“We don't know.”
Rachel traced Claire Bennett.
There was no death certificate matching the supposed crash.
The entire accident had been fabricated using Richard Mercer's network.
Noah Bennett eventually answered his phone.
He wasn't kidnapped.
He was hiding.
“I saw Marcus near my building,” he said.
“Why didn't you call us?”
“Because Marcus told me something about Claire.”
“What?”
Noah began crying.
“My sister never died.”
Harper gripped the phone.
“Where is she?”
“I don't know.”
“But Owen found her?”
Silence.
Then Noah admitted the truth.
Two years before Owen died, Owen discovered Claire had survived.
She had lived under another identity.
She refused to see him.
Not because she hated him.
Because she was protecting the surviving twin.
“From Owen?”
“No.”
“From whom?”
“Marcus.”
The network had used children as leverage before.
Claire believed revealing the child's identity would place the entire family at risk.
Owen agreed to stay away.
That was the meaning of the note.
One of them must never find Harper.
Not “one of the twins.”
One of the people looking for them.
Marcus.
Harper breathed again.
The sentence had been deliberately cropped.
Rachel enhanced the original image metadata recovered from Marcus's message.
There were more words beyond the edge.
They reconstructed the full line:
ONE OF THEM MUST NEVER FIND HARPER OR CLAIRE.
Marcus had manipulated the photograph to make Harper suspect Owen had hidden a child from her.
A cruel misdirection.
But one question remained.
Why Harper?
Why would Marcus searching for Claire's surviving child endanger Harper?
Samuel closed his eyes.
“Because Owen eventually discovered who arranged Claire's disappearance.”
“Marcus?”
“No.”
“Richard?”
Samuel shook his head.
“Walter.”
Harper stared.
Her grandfather had hidden Claire.
Why?
To save the child from Richard's network.
But by doing so, Walter had drawn Owen directly toward the Sloan family.
Owen spent months investigating him.
Then met Harper.
Fell in love.
Quit the arrangement.
Or so everyone had believed.
Daniel found one document among Walter's sealed correspondence.
Addressed to Owen.
IF YOU WANT THE CHILD SAFE, HARPER MUST NEVER KNOW WHY YOU APPROACHED HER.
Harper read it twice.
Her hands began trembling.
There it was again.
A reason beyond investigation.
Beyond her childhood memory.
Beyond Walter's test.
“What did I have to do with Claire's child?”
Samuel could not answer.
Then Rachel's technician traced the ultrasound image.
The clinic still existed.
Old records had recently been digitized.
Claire Bennett had delivered twins.
One boy.
One girl.
One infant was listed as transferred immediately after birth under court protection.
The destination had been sealed.
But the receiving attorney's name remained visible.
Walter Sloan.
Harper stared.
“When was this?”
Rachel gave the date.
Harper went still.
Because she knew that date.
Not from Owen.
From her own family.
It was the exact day Marlene had once told Harper her baby sister died shortly after birth.
Harper looked at her mother.
Marlene's face collapsed.
“No.”
Harper barely recognized her own voice.
“Mom.”
Marlene backed toward the wall.
“Please.”
May you like
Harper held up the ultrasound.
“Was Claire's daughter my sister?”
