Chapter 21 - The Eleventh Login

Harper did not touch the countdown.

72:00:00.

The numbers moved anyway.

71:59:59.

71:59:58.

Rachel Hale was still speaking through the phone.

“Harper, disconnect your internet.”

Harper pulled the router cable from the wall.

The countdown continued.

“It's not coming from outside,” she whispered.

Rachel went silent.

Harper stared at the email supposedly sent by Owen.

This time, don't trust anyone who tells you I'm dead.

For one impossible second, she wanted to believe him.

Wanted Owen standing outside the window.

Wanted the doctors wrong.

Wanted the funeral wrong.

Wanted every awful secret of the last month to produce one miracle.

Then she forced herself to remember his body.

She had identified him.

Held his hand at the hospital.

Buried him.

“No,” Harper said.

Rachel misunderstood.

“No what?”

“Owen is dead.”

The sentence nearly broke her.

But Harper repeated it.

“My husband is dead. So somebody wants me to believe he isn't.”

Rachel arrived at Rosewood House forty minutes later with two federal cyber specialists.

The email had not traveled through conventional servers.

It had been generated locally.

From Rosewood House.

Daniel arrived soon afterward despite having formally withdrawn as Harper's attorney.

“I heard about the login.”

Rachel glared at him.

“You aren't representing her.”

“I know.”

“Then why are you here?”

Daniel looked at Harper.

“Because my brother's network just collapsed under this house, and apparently your dead husband is still sending emails from it.”

Nobody laughed.

Investigators removed the evidence enclosure containing Owen's black device.

The device had no active network connection.

Yet its internal clock matched the email countdown exactly.

71:11:04.

Harper remembered Michael? No.

Owen.

Everything came back to Owen.

The photograph.

The hidden apartment.

The underground servers.

The medication.

The deception through which he had first entered her life.

And now this.

Rachel's technician accessed the administrator logs recovered from Christopher's cabinet.

Eleven postmortem logins.

All authenticated as:

O. SLOAN.

But the technician noticed something strange.

“They aren't remote sessions.”

Rachel leaned closer.

“What does that mean?”

“The administrator didn't log in from eleven different locations.”

He enlarged a line of code.

“He logged in from eleven different devices.”

Harper frowned.

“Eleven computers?”

“No.”

The technician looked at her.

“Eleven physical authentication keys.”

Each contained one fragment of Owen's credentials.

Together they could recreate his administrative identity.

Someone had deliberately distributed Owen after his death.

Not a person.

A permission.

Rachel found the first device registered six weeks after Owen died.

The second four months later.

Then another.

And another.

The most recent login had occurred yesterday.

“Who owns the keys?” Harper asked.

The technician opened encrypted registration certificates.

The first name appeared.

SAMUEL HART.

Harper looked toward Owen's father.

Samuel seemed genuinely confused.

“I don't have anything.”

The second certificate decrypted.

ELIAS SLOAN.

Elias went pale.

Then June.

Then Daniel.

Then Rachel Hale.

Rachel stared at her own name.

“That is impossible.”

One by one, eleven names appeared.

People Owen had known.

People Harper had trusted.

People who had spent years claiming they did not understand what Owen had built.

Harper's stomach tightened.

“You all have pieces of him?”

Rachel shook her head.

“I've never seen that key.”

Then the technician reached the final certificate.

Number eleven.

The screen displayed:

HARPER SLOAN.

Harper stopped breathing.

“I don't have one.”

Nobody answered.

She looked around Rosewood House.

Her home.

Her grandfather's secrets.

Her husband's secrets.

The house everyone had tried to control.

Then her eyes moved toward the evidence case.

Toward the black device Owen had left behind.

The technician opened its underside.

A narrow piece of metal slid free.

A physical authentication key.

Registered to Harper.

She had possessed the eleventh credential from the beginning.

Rachel whispered:

“Someone didn't log in eleven times after Owen died.”

Harper stared at the eleven certificates.

Rachel turned toward her.

“Owen gave eleven different people the ability to become him.”

The countdown changed.

70:03:17.

Then a new line appeared beneath it.

ELEVEN KEYS.

ONE LIAR.

Harper's chest tightened.

May you like

A second line appeared.

ONLY TEN OF YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO SURVIVE.
