Chapter 7 - The Man Behind the Door
Front-door security logs showed code entry three nights while Elena hospitalized after crash.
Diane had code.
Ryan didn't.
Stephen?
No registered code.
Camera footage had been deleted.
But router logs showed smart lock accessed remotely from Diane’s phone.
Diane claimed Stephen borrowed it.
Why?
“He said he was helping organize paperwork.”
Elena could barely believe answer.
“You let the man who helped take my inheritance into my house while I was hospitalized?”
Diane cried.
“He said he could fix everything!”
“For who?”
Silence.
There was Diane.
Not criminal mastermind.
Something messier.
Selfish.
Resentful.
Easily manipulated when manipulation promised comfort.
Then Stephen was found.
Living forty miles away.
Financial consultant under name Steven Vail.
He denied theft.
His attorney produced documents showing Bell Meridian investments initially profitable.
He argued trust benefited.
Later losses came market collapse.
Daniel found partial truth.
Stephen had generated gains early.
Then used leverage recklessly.
He concealed losses.
Diane helped because admitting them meant confessing original misuse.
Hidden wealth had not simply been stolen.
It had been endangered, recovered, reinvested and partly siphoned over years.
Michael reconstructed much.
Then Stephen revealed bomb.
“I built casing.”
Elena stared.
Not Michael?
Stephen said Michael hired him.
Why would Michael work with man who betrayed family?
Because Michael confronted him and offered choice:
Help reconstruct money trail or face civil/criminal referrals.
Stephen cooperated for months.
Built secure hardware.
Then fled again when Michael died.
“So timer isn't revenge weapon?”
“No.”
“What happens at zero?”
Stephen smiled bitterly.
“You think Michael trusted lawyers?”
Daniel raised eyebrow.
“No offense.”
“Some taken.”
Stephen explained archive contained master ledger.
At zero, copies would release to beneficiaries, banks, regulators and certain family members.
But there was another function.
Diane’s fingerprint could stop release.
Why give guilty person veto?
Stephen looked at Elena.
“It doesn't stop it.”
“What does it do?”
“It changes who receives it.”
To whom?
Stephen refused without immunity negotiations.
Then Diane called Elena unexpectedly.
“Elena, I need to see the twins.”
“No.”
“I need to apologize.”
“No.”
Then Diane said something different.
“Your father is alive.”
Elena stopped.
Her father, Thomas Morgan, supposedly died when Elena was four.
