Chapter 3 - The Twenty-Six Million Dollars

Diane owed the trust $740,000.
Original amount:
$180,000.
Interest and investment opportunity adjustments increased it over two decades.
Why would Elena’s mother owe a trust created for Elena?
Daniel traced source.
Elena’s maternal grandfather, Arthur Bell.
Elena remembered him vaguely.
Quiet man.
Owned three hardware stores.
Died when she was twelve.
Apparently stores were small piece.
Arthur invested early in regional logistics company.
When company sold, his shares became worth millions.
His will created trusts for grandchildren.
Elena had one.
Diane had been temporary custodian.
At eleven, Elena could not control money.
Then something happened.
Diane withdrew $180,000 using a document claiming medical emergency.
What emergency?
None.
She used money as down payment on a commercial property with boyfriend.
Investment failed.
Arthur discovered shortly before death.
Instead of prosecuting daughter, he converted withdrawal into formal debt and appointed independent trustee.
Why had Elena never received millions at adulthood?
Because trustee changed.
Records became fragmented after bank merger.
Then Michael found them.
He spent years reconstructing claim.
Investment assets had continued compounding.
By time he died:
$18 million.
Now:
$26.4 million.
Elena sat speechless.
“Why didn't Michael tell me?”
Daniel didn't know.
Then he found Michael’s private letter.
I wanted certainty before telling Elena. Diane has spent her whole life convincing her daughter that wanting anything for herself is selfish. If Elena learns she's wealthy before we understand structure, Diane will find a way inside it.
Elena hated reading husband describe mother that way.
Then remembered six weeks of Diane complaining she deserved compensation for “babysitting.”
Maybe Michael had seen clearly.
But what did timer have to do with trust?
Daniel examined photographs.
The device looked real.
Could be improvised explosive.
Could be prop.
They did not manipulate it.
Authorities inspected.
Unexpected result:
No explosive material.
No detonator.
No dangerous charge.
It wasn't a bomb.
Elena almost laughed from relief.
Then what was it?
Electronics specialist identified encrypted hardware authenticator inside fake bomb casing.
Timer was cosmetic.
Buttons controlled encrypted data access.
Michael had disguised something valuable as something frightening.
Why?
Then technician found one hidden port.
Daniel connected isolated forensic system.
Screen displayed:
72:00:00.
Three days.
And one instruction:
AUTHORIZATION REQUIRES D.M. BIOMETRIC CONFIRMATION.
D.M.
Diane Morgan?
Daniel frowned.
“If Michael built this to protect you from your mother…”
May you like
He looked at Elena.
“Why did he design it so only Diane could activate it?”
