Chapter 27 - The Sister Who Never Died

Marlene did not answer immediately.

That was answer enough.

Harper felt something inside her become completely still.

“My sister lived.”

Marlene cried.

“Yes.”

Harper remembered almost nothing.

She had been young.

A hospital.

Adults whispering.

A tiny knitted hat her mother kept for years.

The explanation had always been simple.

Complications.

The baby did not survive.

Except the child had survived.

And she wasn't Marlene's child.

Claire Bennett had delivered twins while Walter was trying to hide her family from Richard Mercer's network.

At almost the same time, Marlene lost her newborn daughter.

Walter saw an opportunity.

A terrible one.

He temporarily placed Claire's infant girl into Marlene's medical records, planning to establish a clean identity and relocate her.

Marlene had just lost a baby.

She was grieving.

For three days she held Claire's daughter.

Fed her.

Named her Lily.

Then Walter took the child away.

“He told me she would die if anyone knew,” Marlene whispered.

Harper stared at her.

“And you let me believe my sister died.”

“I believed she was safer dead.”

The family disease again.

Protection through lies.

Harper wanted to scream.

Instead she asked the question that mattered.

“Where did Walter send her?”

Marlene didn't know.

Only Walter and one attorney handled the transfer.

That attorney?

Richard Mercer.

The same man Walter was trying to protect the child from.

Daniel went pale.

“Then my father knew.”

Richard had access to the child's new identity.

Marcus could have inherited it.

That was why Owen remained involved.

He wasn't simply investigating Harper's memory.

Walter had made Harper part of the protective wall around Claire's daughter.

Anyone reconstructing the transfer would eventually reach Rosewood House.

Reach Marlene.

Reach Harper.

Owen came close because he needed to know whether Harper remembered those three days.

Then he fell in love with her.

Harper hated how both things could be true.

Rachel searched sealed adoption and guardianship records.

One file had been accessed eleven times over twenty years.

Always through shell law firms connected to Richard.

The child's replacement name was encrypted.

But a recent access came from Marcus Vale.

Three weeks before Harper's crash? Not her crash—this story's current branch had no recent crash.

Three weeks before Christopher's arrest.

Marcus had finally found her.

Harper's phone rang.

Marcus.

She answered.

“You know now,” he said.

“Where is she?”

“Alive.”

“Where?”

“Closer than you think.”

Harper clenched her jaw.

“What do you want?”

“Margaret's chair.”

“You already know the phrase.”

“I know the phrase.”

“Then why the chair?”

Marcus sounded almost amused.

“Because you still believe the phrase is the key.”

It wasn't.

The chair contained another hidden compartment.

Rachel's team found it beneath one of the legs.

Inside:

a tiny strip of microfilm.

Eleven names.

Not the current keyholders.

The original intended trustees.

Margaret.

Walter.

Richard.

Samuel.

June.

Elias.

And five strangers.

Marcus was absent.

Margaret had never intended her own son to control anything.

That rejection had shaped his entire life.

At the bottom of the microfilm was one final instruction:

THE TWELFTH HOLDS NO VOTE.

THE TWELFTH CHOOSES THE ELEVEN.

Harper stared.

The entire system had a hidden constitutional role.

A custodian who could remove corrupt trustees and appoint replacements but could never control the archive personally.

“The twelfth person,” Rachel whispered.

“Who is it?”

The final name had been scratched away.

But one code remained.

L.B.

Lily Bennett?

Claire's daughter?

Harper's lost “sister”?

Daniel traced the current Twelfth credential.

Active.

Used seven times after Owen died.

Harper felt hope and fear collide.

“If Lily is using it, she knows everything.”

Rachel shook her head.

“Maybe.”

Then the system recorded another Twelfth login.

Right now.

Location:

Rosewood House.

Everyone froze.

Rachel's agents searched the property.

Nobody unexpected.

No stranger.

No hidden woman.

Harper stared at the list of people already in the house.

Samuel.

June.

Elias.

Marlene.

Daniel.

Rachel.

Her daughter upstairs under guard.

Then she understood.

L.B. did not have to be Lily Bennett.

She looked at Rachel.

“What is your middle name?”

Rachel didn't answer.

Harper's heart began pounding.

“Rachel.”

Slowly, Rachel Hale removed her federal badge.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“My legal name isn't Rachel Hale.”

Harper stopped breathing.

May you like

Rachel placed the badge on the table.

“I was born Lily Bennett.”
