Chapter 9 - The Chase on Four Wheels

"Great! Just great!" Jack yelled, grabbing the heavy little robot under his arm like an oversized football. "I came out here to catch bass, not get drafted into an alien war!"
He sprinted toward his old beat-up blue pickup truck parked near the willow trees, his boots pounding against the soft soil. Behind him, the black ATVs surged out of the riverbed, their tires tearing up the green grass as two men dressed in tactical black gear leaned out of the passenger windows, raising strange, bulky devices aimed directly at Jack's back.
Jack reached his truck, threw the driver-side door open, and tossed the silver robot onto the worn bench seat before scrambling inside himself. He jammed his keys into the ignition and turned the crank. The old V8 engine sputtered, coughed, and finally roared to life just as a bright blue energy beam blasted through the rear windshield, shattering the glass into a thousand tiny sparkles.
