Chapter 8 - The Signal in the Woods
Before the tiny robot could answer, the turquoise glow in its eyes flickered violently, changing to a sharp, flashing orange. A low, rhythmic pinging sound began to pulse from a small speaker on its chest panel.
"Warning," the robot chimed, its voice losing its playful tone and adopting a flat, mechanical cadence. "Hostile tracking signal detected. Distance: eight hundred meters and closing fast."
Jack's heart sank into his stomach. "Hostile? What do you mean hostile?!"

From the deep woods on the far side of the river, the sound of heavy engines broke the quiet of the afternoon. Two black, unmarked all-terrain vehicles burst through the thick underbrush, their dark-tinted windows reflecting the sunlight as they splashed recklessly into the shallow water, heading directly for Jack's campsite.
Jack looked at the black trucks, then down at the small silver robot that was now clinging tightly to the leg of his wet blue jeans.
