Chapter 12 - The Airborne Truck

The sudden burst of unnatural speed sent the pickup flying up a steep dirt incline at the top of the hill. The truck launched into the air, soaring across a wide gap above a rocky ravine while the black ATVs slammed on their brakes at the edge of the cliff, unable to make the jump.
The old pickup slammed back onto the paved highway on the other side of the ridge with a deafening crash, bouncing twice on its worn suspension before Jack managed to wrestle the steering wheel back under control.
In the rearview mirror, the black vehicles grew smaller and smaller until they disappeared over the crest of the hill.

Jack pulled the truck over onto the shoulder of the empty highway, put the transmission in park, and collapsed back against his seat, his chest heaving as sweat mixed with river water dripped down his nose.
"We... we made it," Jack panted, leaning his head against the headrest.
