Chapter 10 - The Highway Escape
Jack slammed his foot onto the gas pedal, sending the pickup truck careening out of the meadow and onto the narrow dirt access road that led up into the hills. Dust clouds billowed behind the truck as the two black ATVs gave chase, their heavy engines roaring in tight pursuit.
"Who are those guys?!" Jack shouted over the roar of the wind whipping through the shattered rear window, his knuckles white as he gripped the steering wheel.
The robot pulled itself up onto the dashboard, its turquoise eyes scanning the side mirror as the black vehicles gained ground on the winding gravel turn.

"Corporate retrieval team," the robot explained calmly, its small articulated hand pointing toward the lead ATV. "They wish to reclaim my central core. If they succeed, your local star system will be dismantled for raw materials."
Jack almost swerved off the edge of the dirt road into a ditch. "THEY'RE GOING TO DISMANTLE THE EARTH?!"
