Chapter 11 - The Dashboard Genius

"Correction," the robot replied smoothly, a tiny hatch opening on its shoulder to reveal a glowing interface cable. "Only if my core is unsealed. I require a high-voltage power source to activate my defensive perimeter."
"I drive a thirty-year-old Ford, buddy! I don't have a high-voltage power source!" Jack yelled, swerving hard to avoid a large boulder blocking half the road.
Behind them, the lead black ATV pulled up alongside the driver's side of the pickup truck. The black-clad driver turned his head, revealing a cold, robotic eye underneath a dark helmet. He raised a heavy metal launcher aimed directly at Jack's front tire.

"Plugging into vehicle alternator," the robot announced cheerfully.
It jammed its interface cable directly into the truck's cigarette lighter socket. Instantly, the pickup's dashboard lights exploded in a brilliant flare of purple light. The old engine didn't just roar—it screeched like a jet engine, sending the rusty speedometer needle spinning completely past ninety miles per hour as the truck shot forward like a rocket.
