Chapter 9 - Claire’s Missing Memory
The phrase sounded absurd until Daniel obtained medical records from Graham’s Baltimore rental.
Claire had suffered a head injury.
April 17.
Not April 19.
A private neurologist examined her under initials C.E.C.
Symptoms:
concussion.
Intermittent memory gaps.
Acute anxiety.
Difficulty recalling approximately ninety minutes surrounding injury.
Claire remembered creating fake certificate.
She remembered audit.
She remembered leaving study.
She remembered meeting Graham.
Then blank.
She later woke in Graham’s car with blood on temple.
She did not know exactly what happened.
Graham believed someone attacked her.
Claire wasn't sure.
Her missing memory made her vulnerable to suggestion.
So Graham moved her temporarily to safe location.
She agreed.
Then evidence against Daniel appeared.
A watch like his.
His access code.
A threatening email from his account.
Claire knew Daniel was in Chicago.
She suspected someone was framing him.
She refused to return until source found.
Three weeks later her memory began returning.
She remembered something inside study.
A woman arguing.
A broken photograph.
A silver bracelet.
And Vanessa’s voice.
That explained why Claire hesitated to return.
She feared Vanessa.
But was memory accurate?
Vanessa denied being in study April 17.
Phone location placed her at restaurant until 8:40 p.m.
Claire’s memory gap occurred around 9.
Vanessa could have returned by then.
Then restaurant parking footage showed Vanessa leaving 8:43.
Home distance fourteen minutes.
Possible.
Daniel confronted her.
Vanessa finally admitted:
“I went home.”
There.
She arrived approximately 9:01.
Claire was there.
Graham was there.
They were arguing.
About what?
Claire had discovered Vanessa secretly copied trust documents for someone.
Who?
A corporate attorney named Marcus Hale.
Northstar’s outside adviser.
Vanessa had been romantically involved with Marcus for several months.
He asked her for trust documents claiming they were needed for valuation.
She sent them.
Claire discovered.
Those documents exposed emergency voting mechanism.
Marcus could pass them to Northstar.
Vanessa realized she had compromised family.
Claire was furious.
They argued.
Claire grabbed Vanessa’s wrist.
Bracelet snapped.
But bracelet belonged to Claire.
How?
Vanessa had been holding it after Claire removed it to access hidden archive panel.
During struggle, bracelet fell.
Claire bent to retrieve it.
Vanessa stepped backward.
Her heel struck loose frame on floor.
Frame toppled.
Claire startled, lost balance and hit side of head against desk.
No deliberate attack.
Vanessa panicked.
Graham entered seconds later.
He checked Claire.
She was conscious but disoriented.
He wanted hospital.
Claire refused.
She believed Northstar-connected people might track admission.
So Graham drove her to private physician.
Vanessa stayed behind.
This was April 17 injury.
Not attempted murder.
Not kidnapping.
But Vanessa concealed it for seven months.
Daniel stared at her.
“You watched me search for my wife.”
“I thought Graham was bringing her back.”
“And when he didn't?”
“I was afraid I'd be blamed.”
“You were more afraid for yourself than for Claire.”
Vanessa could not deny it.
Then Daniel asked:
“Did you ever speak to Marcus after Claire vanished?”
Vanessa whispered:
“Yes.”

“What did he say?”
“He said Claire would never come back.”
