Chapter 17 - The Passenger Seat

Daniel requested his original crash file.
Not the family copy.
The hospital archive.
The police report had been amended twice.
First version:
One occupant.
Daniel Carter.
Second version, filed forty-eight hours later:
Possible second occupant removed before police arrival.
Third version:
Second occupant unconfirmed.
Daniel stared.
“How does a passenger become unconfirmed?”
The answer sat inside emergency dispatch records.
At 11:42 p.m., a caller reported a black sedan off Route 9.
Two injured occupants.
Male driver.
Female passenger.
At 11:48, an ambulance arrived.
Daniel was still inside.
Passenger seat empty.
Blood on airbag.
Door open.
No woman nearby.
Claire Holloway had left—or been removed—during those six minutes.
Daniel remembered nothing after headlights.
Then Claire Carter found another detail.
“Your injuries.”
Daniel looked.
Broken collarbone.
Concussion.
Three fractured ribs.
No major leg trauma.
Yet rehabilitation records described three weeks of “post-traumatic motor retraining.”
“For what?”
Daniel didn’t know.
The rehabilitation center specialized partly in neurological memory recovery.
Henry had placed Daniel there privately after discharge.
Not because he could not walk.
Because he could not remember the hour before impact.
The center used cognitive interviewing.
No transcripts survived in Daniel’s medical chart.
But Halcyon had copies.
The fund’s attorney confirmed that Halcyon still existed.
Independent.
Frozen.
No active distributions for nine years.
Daniel requested access as Carter family beneficiary.
Denied.
Claire requested access using HC-2 code.
Approved.
The bracelet opened something after all.
Not a physical safe.
A custodial identity.
Claire stared at the confirmation screen.
“Your father enrolled me seven years ago without telling me.”
Daniel felt ashamed on behalf of a dead man.
Henry had seen Claire Carter investigating family records.
Recognized the same stubbornness Claire Holloway possessed.
Instead of telling her the truth, he embedded authorization into her bracelet.
Another adult arranging the future through secrets.
Inside Halcyon:
Audio file.
DANIEL C. — SESSION 6.
Age twenty.
His own younger voice.
Therapist:
“Who was in the car?”
Daniel:
“Claire.”
“Claire who?”
“I don't know.”
“You said her name earlier.”
“She told me not to say it.”
“Why?”
“Dad will ruin everything.”
Daniel stopped playback.
His hands trembled.
Claire Carter touched his wrist.
“Keep going.”
Young Daniel continued.
“We were taking evidence.”
“What evidence?”
“Votes.”
“What does that mean?”
“Dad killed them.”
Silence.
Present-day Daniel stared.
“Dad killed who?”
The therapist asked exactly that.
Young Daniel began crying.
“Not people.”
“Then what?”
“Their votes.”
Daniel remembered nothing.
The tape continued.
Claire Holloway had shown him six beneficiary files.
People marked deceased inside Carter systems while alive.
Temporary control had shifted.
Daniel wanted to expose Henry.
Claire Holloway planned to take him to a regulator herself because she feared Henry’s lawyers would intercept documents.
Then the crash.
“What caused it?” Claire Carter whispered.
Daniel listened.
Young Daniel:
“There was a truck.”
“What truck?”
“It came behind us.”
“Did it hit your car?”
“No.”
“What happened?”
“Claire screamed.”
“Why?”
“She saw who was driving.”
“Who?”
Long pause.
Then Daniel said one name.
“Arthur.”
Daniel’s chest tightened.
Arthur Bell.
Henry’s former business partner.
The man with the second onyx ring.
But Arthur supposedly left Carter Biomedical eleven years before the crash.
Why would he chase them?
Session tape ended.
A second file appeared.
CLAIRE HOLLOWAY STATEMENT.
Daniel clicked.
Her voice was calm.
“The crash was not caused by Arthur Bell.”
Daniel stopped.
Claire Carter looked at him.
“Play it.”
Claire Holloway continued:
“Daniel saw Arthur’s company truck and assumed Arthur was driving.”
“He was not.”
“Arthur Bell was sitting beside me when the ambulance arrived.”
Daniel stared.
“That makes no sense.”
Then Claire Holloway explained.
Arthur had not chased them.
He rescued her.
He arrived first.
Dragged Claire Holloway from the passenger side because he smelled leaking fuel.
He tried to reach Daniel but Daniel was trapped.
Claire, bleeding and disoriented, gave Arthur one instruction:
“Take the Halcyon file before Henry gets here.”
Arthur did.
Then disappeared with her before police arrived.
Not kidnapping.
Not conspiracy.
Emergency protection.
But one question remained.
Who had been driving Arthur’s company truck?
The Halcyon statement answered.
Claire Holloway had seen the driver.
Graham Voss.
May you like
Daniel’s later family attorney.
The same Graham who, twelve years afterward, would hide Claire Carter.
