Chapter 1 - The Bracelet That Shouldn’t Have Been There

Noah heard Lily scream before he saw the hanger.

He had been crouching beside the coffee table, trying to retrieve a toy that had rolled underneath it, when Vanessa’s voice cut through the living room.

“You little brat.”

Then came the sharp sound.

Lily cried out.

Noah crawled out and saw his twelve-month-old sister pressed against the cream wall, sobbing, one tiny hand against her cheek. Vanessa stood over her with a clothes hanger clenched in her hand.

She raised it again.

Noah did not think.

He threw himself between them.

“DON’T TOUCH HER!”

Vanessa’s jaw tightened.

The hanger started downward—

The front door burst open.

Daniel Carter stood there in his burgundy business jacket.

For half a second, he did not move.

Then his expression changed.

“DROP IT!”

He crossed the living room and forced Vanessa away from the children. The hanger flew from her hand and skidded across the oak floor. Vanessa stumbled backward into the wooden console, knocking the lamp and framed photographs onto the floor.

Daniel immediately lifted Lily.

Noah pressed against him.

Daniel looked at his younger sister with an expression Vanessa had never seen before.

“You will never touch my children again.”

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Then Lily did something strange.

Still crying, she pointed down the wide hallway.

At the closed dark-wood door of Daniel’s private study.

“Mom…”

Daniel looked down.

Lily had only recently begun forming words.

“What, sweetheart?”

“Mom… found… something.”

Her finger remained aimed at the study.

Vanessa went completely pale.

Daniel noticed.

“What did Claire find?”

Vanessa said nothing.

Seven months earlier, Claire Carter—Daniel’s wife and the mother of Noah and Lily—had disappeared.

No body.

No farewell.

No confirmed death.

Her abandoned SUV had been discovered near a wooded highway forty miles from home.

Daniel had never stopped searching.

And nobody had entered his private study since the week Claire vanished.

Or so he believed.

Vanessa quietly pulled out her phone.

Daniel saw her press CALL.

A man answered immediately.

His voice was loud enough for Daniel to hear.

“Did Carter find the death certificate?”

Vanessa’s eyes widened.

She ended the call.

Daniel stared at her.

“What death certificate?”

Then—

CREAK.

Everyone turned.

The study door slowly opened several inches.

Something rolled from the darkness.

CLINK.

A silver bracelet slid across the hallway floor.

Daniel stopped breathing.

Noah whispered:

“Dad…”

Daniel knew the bracelet.

He had given it to Claire on their tenth anniversary.

Claire had been wearing it the morning she disappeared.

Daniel picked it up.

Then a woman screamed from somewhere beyond the study door.

Daniel ran toward it.

He pushed the door open—

and stopped.

Nobody was there.

But the chair behind his desk was still slowly turning.

And lying in its center was a cream envelope bearing one handwritten word:

DANIEL.
