Chapter 8 - The Call Before Daniel Came Home
Vanessa had made a call nineteen minutes before Daniel entered house.
Same unknown number.
The man told her Daniel had finally discovered Claire’s hidden study archive.
That was false.
Daniel had discovered nothing.
The caller wanted Vanessa frightened.
He said Claire’s original death certificate was behind study door.
If Daniel found it, Vanessa would be blamed for Claire’s disappearance.
Vanessa panicked.
She searched living room for old key Claire once hid among children’s belongings.
Lily toddled toward hallway.
Vanessa grabbed her.
Lily resisted.
Vanessa lost control.
Nothing justified what happened next.
No blackmail.
No fear.
No mystery.
Vanessa had hurt a child.
Daniel made that distinction explicit.
“You don't get to blame whoever called you for what you did.”
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
“I know.”
The unknown man had manipulated her.
But she chose violence.
Police traced call through a prepaid service.
Then voice analysis found match.
Not Graham.
Not Northstar executive.
Not stranger.
Evan Voss.
Graham’s thirty-six-year-old son.
Daniel knew him casually.
Evan worked in financial compliance.
Why target Vanessa?
Police found him at apartment.
He did not flee.
He admitted calls.
“I needed her to expose herself.”
“You terrorized my family.”
“I thought Vanessa helped Claire disappear.”
“Why?”
“Because my father told me she did.”
Graham had told Evan that Vanessa signed false-death test and received $150,000.
Evan misread both as evidence.
He believed his father was protecting Vanessa.
After Graham vanished, Evan began investigating alone.
He found Claire’s duplicate bracelet in Graham’s storage locker.
He entered Carter house through maintenance passage.
He placed bracelet behind study door.
He rigged prerecorded scream.
He sent Vanessa escalating calls.
His goal:
Force Daniel to open study and discover Claire’s archive.
So mystery of opening door was partly solved.
Evan staged it.
But where did he get Claire’s bracelet?
“From my father.”
“Why did Graham have it?”
“I don't know.”
“And photograph of Claire holding today’s newspaper?”
Evan looked confused.
“What photograph?”
Daniel showed him.
Evan’s face changed.
“I didn't send that.”
“Then who did?”
“I don't know.”
Forensics confirmed message came from different routing system.
Someone else was communicating.
Someone close enough to Claire to photograph her today.
Then Evan said:
“If Claire is alive, ask her why my father spent seven months keeping her hidden.”
Daniel replied:
“I'm trying.”
Evan shook his head.
“No. You still think my father was protecting Claire from whoever attacked her.”
“Wasn't he?”
