Chapter 11 - Why Graham Wanted Claire to Sign
Graham Voss had offered Claire $5 million.
That looked devastating.
Until Daniel found the draft.
Graham was not paying Claire personally.
He was transmitting settlement proposal from Carter Family Protection Trust’s insurer.
Why?
Because Claire threatened lawsuit over weak safeguards allowing outsiders like Marcus to access confidential provisions.
The proposed $5 million would fund independent children’s trust while Claire temporarily stepped away from trust governance.
Claire rejected it.
She believed stepping away would make emergency voting structure easier to manipulate.
So Graham did not bribe her to disappear.
He presented a bad settlement.
Why hide afterward?
Because after April 17 injury, Graham became convinced someone inside trust network intended to frame Daniel and pressure Claire.
He moved her.
Claire agreed for days.
Days became weeks.
Then months.
That was where protection became control.
Graham filtered her communications.
He told Daniel nothing.
He told Vanessa Claire was safe.
He told Claire investigation was still dangerous.
He gradually convinced her returning would destroy case.
Claire attempted to leave twice.
First time, Graham persuaded her not to.
Second time, she left without permission.
That was three weeks ago.
Where did she go?
Unknown.
So Graham was not kidnapper in traditional sense.
But he had exercised unacceptable control over frightened, injured woman.
Then why had Graham vanished six weeks earlier?
Evan finally explained.
His father discovered someone had been accessing Claire’s location files.
He believed safe house compromised.
He moved her again.
Then Claire disappeared from him too.
Graham went searching.
Daniel received a call.
Unknown number.
This time, a woman.
“Daniel?”
He froze.
He knew voice.
Seven months had not erased it.
“Claire?”
Silence.
Then crying.
“Yes.”
Daniel had imagined this moment thousands of times.
Anger.
Relief.
Questions.
All vanished.
“Where are you?”
“I can't tell you yet.”
His relief turned instantly to frustration.
“No. We are done with that.”
“Daniel—”
“No more clues. No more people deciding what I can handle. Tell me where you are.”
Claire breathed shakily.
“I need to know whether Vanessa is with you.”
Daniel looked at his sister.
“Yes.”
Claire went silent.
Vanessa whispered:
“Claire?”
Claire’s voice hardened.
“Ask Vanessa where my original bracelet is.”
Daniel looked down.
He had two bracelets now.
The one Evan rolled from study.
And one delivered anonymously later.
He had assumed second was original.
Vanessa stared at them.
Then shook her head.
“Neither.”
Daniel felt cold.
“What?”
Claire said:
“My real bracelet has something inside it.”
“What?”
“Proof.”
“Of what?”
