Chapter 13 - Evan’s Reason
Evan admitted entering study.
But not why Graham thought.
He had been following Marcus Hale.
Evan worked in compliance and suspected Marcus was leaking trust documents to Northstar.
On April 17, Marcus told him someone was meeting Claire.
Evan entered Carter house through passage using route his father showed him years earlier.
He wore Henry’s ring because he had taken it from appraisal storage while investigating whether Henry’s estate documents had been altered.
Stupid.
Suspicious.
But not disguise.
He found Claire injured and Vanessa beside her.
He panicked.

Then left.
Cowardly.
But Claire was conscious.
Vanessa remained with her.
Graham arrived later.
Evan did not attack Claire.

She looked at him.
“For what?”
“For spending seven months imagining someone took you when part of truth was that you kept choosing not to come back.”
Claire lowered eyes.
“I know.”
No instant embrace.
No easy forgiveness.
Then she asked about children.
Daniel told her they were safe.
Claire cried.
“Lily probably doesn't know me.”
“She knows your picture.”
That hurt more.
Claire handed Daniel original silver bracelet.

The two others were duplicates created by Claire and Margaret? Wait Margaret removed from story. Daniel opened hidden clasp.
Inside was tiny brass token:
Proof of locker.
Then Claire gave him complete video.
It confirmed Vanessa’s account of accident.
Confirmed Evan entered.
Confirmed Graham arrived later.
Nobody attacked Claire after Vanessa left.
“Then why death certificate?”
Claire answered:
“Because someone stole my test document and changed one thing.”
“What?”
“My test version was stamped SAMPLE.”
The copy Vanessa received was not.
Someone had removed SAMPLE marking.
They wanted fake certificate to appear real.
“Who?”
Claire looked at Daniel.
“That's what I finally discovered three weeks ago.”
“Who?”
Before she could answer, Daniel’s phone rang.
Vanessa.
He answered.
