Chapter 10 - The Man Who Said Claire Would Never Return

Marcus Hale became strongest suspect.

Northstar’s outside adviser.

Vanessa’s former lover.

Recipient of confidential trust documents.

He stood to receive approximately $3.8 million if acquisition succeeded.

And he told Vanessa Claire would never return.

But when investigators confronted him, his explanation complicated everything.

He did not know Claire had disappeared when he said it.

Vanessa had told him Claire intended to expose document leak.

Marcus responded:

“If she reports this, she’ll never come back to Carter board discussions again.”

Vanessa remembered only phrase.

Context mattered.

Still, Marcus had improperly received trust documents.

He admitted it.

He claimed he never used them.

Evidence contradicted him.

Northstar’s legal strategy referenced emergency voting provisions almost word-for-word.

Marcus passed material to senior counsel.

Professional misconduct.

Potential conspiracy around acquisition.

But no evidence he harmed Claire.

Then Daniel asked who first told Northstar Claire was dead.

Marcus answered:

“Nobody.”

“What?”

“Northstar never believed she was dead.”

They believed Claire was voluntarily absent.

Fake death certificate never reached Northstar.

Then who was certificate intended for?

Claire’s trap was breached, but nobody used it in acquisition.

Someone else had stolen it for another reason.

Daniel returned to first clue.

Death certificate.

Bracelet.

Study.

Maybe financial deal was misdirection around more personal secret.

He examined Claire’s archive.

Inside was a folder labeled:

LILY — APRIL 17.

Daniel’s pulse increased.

Inside:

No medical scandal.

No paternity twist.

Instead, a trust statement.

When Lily was born, Henry Carter’s Family Protection Trust automatically created a protected subaccount for her.

Standard.

But balance was not standard.

$2.6 million appeared on day of birth.

Source:

Claire Carter.

Daniel stared.

Claire did not possess $2.6 million separately.

Or he thought she didn't.

Where did money come from?

Tracing showed funds came from sale of a small parcel of industrial land Claire inherited from her mother years earlier.

Daniel had forgotten it existed.

Claire sold it quietly.

Why place entire proceeds into Lily’s trust?

Attached note:

IF SOMETHING HAPPENS TO ME, THIS MONEY CANNOT BE USED TO BUY CONTROL OF MY CHILDREN.

Claire anticipated danger.

Not physical death necessarily.

Custody and financial leverage.

Then another note:

VANESSA KNOWS WHO ASKED ME TO SIGN THE WAIVER.

Daniel looked at his sister.

“What waiver?”

Vanessa began crying again.

A week before Claire disappeared, someone offered Claire $5 million.

In exchange for what?

Not company shares.

Not silence.

She had to sign a declaration voluntarily resigning as co-guardian of children’s trust interests for five years.

“Who offered it?”

May you like

Vanessa whispered:

“Graham.”
