Chapter 4 - The Day After Claire Died
The shoe belonged to Lily.
Daniel found photographs confirming it.
Claire had bought the pair when Lily was three months old.
One shoe disappeared shortly before Claire vanished.
Claire joked that the washing machine had eaten it.
Apparently it had not.
Why write her own name and April 18 inside it?
The day after the fake death date.
Daniel began treating everything Claire left as deliberate.
The shoe.
The bracelet.
The certificate.
The hidden photograph.
Not random evidence.
A trail.
Claire had expected something to happen.
The maintenance passage led from Daniel’s study behind the living-room wall and into an unused storage space connected to the garage.
Anyone who knew the house could enter the study without using hallway door.
Who knew?
Henry Carter.
The architect.
Graham Voss.
And Vanessa.
Daniel stared at his sister.
“You knew about passage.”
Vanessa nodded.
“As kids.”
“You told me you didn't.”
“I forgot until Claire showed me.”
Another lie by omission.
Then police found something farther inside.
A portable audio device.
The woman’s scream Daniel heard had been prerecorded.
Timestamp showed device activated remotely seconds before study door opened.
So no woman necessarily screamed inside that room.
Someone had staged the moment.
The door itself had been pulled open using thin line running through passage.
Someone wanted Daniel to enter study.
Someone wanted him to find bracelet and certificate.
That changed the question.
The intruder might not be hiding Claire’s secrets.
They might be exposing them.
Then Daniel’s phone received a message.
Unknown sender.
VANESSA DIDN’T KILL CLAIRE.
ASK HER WHO PAID HER.
Daniel showed Vanessa.
Her face collapsed.
“What payment?”
Silence.
“Vanessa.”
She finally admitted receiving $150,000 three weeks after Claire disappeared.
Daniel nearly lost control.
“From whom?”
“Carter Family Protection Trust.”
“Why?”
“I thought it was Dad’s inheritance.”
“You didn't question $150,000 arriving after my wife vanished?”
“I did.”
“What did they tell you?”
“That Claire authorized it.”
Daniel stared.
“Claire?”
Vanessa produced bank record.
Payment memo:
V.C. — COMPLIANCE / APRIL PROTOCOL.
Authorized electronically:
CLAIRE CARTER.
Date:
May 2.
Two weeks after Claire disappeared.
Daniel’s pulse quickened.
Either Claire was alive two weeks later—
or someone had access to her credentials.
Then Noah said:
“Dad, Mom knew Aunt Vanessa got money.”
Everyone turned.
“How?”
Noah looked frightened.
“Because Mom called me.”
Daniel stopped breathing.
“When?”
