Chapter 6 - What Happened on April 17
Claire had not vanished on April 17.
Her SUV was discovered April 19.
For seven months everyone assumed she disappeared sometime during those two days.
Now April 17 mattered.
The fake certificate used that date.
Claire wrote it inside Lily’s old shoe.
Graham’s note mentioned it.
Daniel reconstructed Claire’s schedule.
Morning: pediatric appointment with Lily.
Afternoon: meeting with Vanessa.
6:20 p.m.: Claire entered Daniel’s study.
7:05 p.m.: security cameras went offline for twenty-three minutes.
7:31 p.m.: Claire called Graham.
8:10 p.m.: Claire drove away.
9:02 p.m.: she returned.
Daniel had never known.
At 9:14 p.m., another person entered through garage.
A man.
Face hidden.
Claire left again at 10:03.
She did not return.
Who was man?
Old garage footage had been partially corrupted.
But his watch was visible.
Daniel recognized it.
Henry Carter’s silver chronograph.
After Henry died, Daniel inherited it.
Except Daniel was away in Chicago on April 17.
His watch had been inside bedroom safe.
When he returned, it was still there.
Someone had worn a similar watch deliberately.
Impersonation.
Why?
To make camera footage suggest Daniel entered house?
Claire’s audit records provided answer.
Family Protection Trust held 18 percent of Carter Biomedical, the company Henry founded.
Estimated value:
$74 million.
But trust beneficiaries did not personally own that block.
It existed to protect Noah and Lily’s future interests.
If Daniel became incapacitated or implicated in serious wrongdoing, temporary voting authority transferred to independent trustee.
Who?
Graham Voss.
If Claire died or disappeared simultaneously, emergency provision activated immediately.
Someone had reason to make Daniel look suspicious while Claire vanished.
Not necessarily to steal $74 million.
Trustee could not sell shares.
But could vote them.
What major vote was approaching?
Carter Biomedical was considering a $520 million acquisition offer from Northstar Health.
Daniel opposed sale.
Graham had not publicly taken position.
Claire opposed it strongly.
Then investigators found something startling.
April 18—one day after fake death date—Graham had signed emergency memorandum refusing to activate trust.
He wrote:
CLAIRE IS ALIVE. DANIEL IS NOT INVOLVED. EMERGENCY TRIGGER IS COMPROMISED.
So Graham knew Claire survived.
And protected Daniel.
Maybe he was not villain.
Then why hide Claire?
A handwritten addendum answered partially:
C.E.C. REQUESTS PROTECTIVE SECLUSION UNTIL SOURCE OF FALSE DANIEL EVIDENCE IS IDENTIFIED.
Claire chose to hide.
At least initially.
Daniel stared at sentence.
“She left voluntarily.”
Vanessa whispered:
“At first.”
Daniel turned.
“What does that mean?”
Vanessa’s eyes filled with fear.
“Because three weeks later, Claire tried to come home.”
