Chapter 12 - The Third Person in the Study

Vanessa had not told entire truth.

After Claire struck her head, Graham did not arrive immediately.

There were approximately four missing minutes.

Claire’s recovered memory now included them.

Vanessa was kneeling beside her.

Then someone entered through maintenance passage.

A man.

Claire could not see face clearly.

He took papers from desk.

Then took Claire’s bracelet.

Vanessa saw him.

“Who?” Daniel demanded.

Vanessa shook her head.

“I didn't see his face.”

Claire interrupted through phone.

“You saw his hand.”

Vanessa closed eyes.

A ring.

Black onyx.

Gold border.

Distinctive.

Daniel knew one man who wore it.

Graham Voss.

But Graham supposedly entered through hallway later.

Could Graham have been third person and then pretended to arrive?

Vanessa said no.

“Graham’s ring was silver.”

Then Daniel remembered another.

Henry Carter had worn black onyx signet ring.

After Henry died, ring went to family archive.

Who removed it?

Inventory showed:

Graham Voss.

Six months before Claire disappeared.

Purpose:

estate appraisal.

Never returned.

Someone possessed Henry’s ring and wore it into study deliberately.

Another impersonation symbol, like Daniel’s watch.

Someone wanted witnesses and cameras to associate crimes with Carter men.

Who had access to estate appraisal items?

Graham.

Evan.

Estate storage manager.

And Vanessa.

Again too many.

Claire then revealed what was inside original bracelet.

A micro-storage? Avoid gadget. Better tiny rolled paper? Bracelet link could contain a miniature engraved serial. She says "proof" of serial on clasp that identifies estate seal? Maybe she hid a small strip with locker number. Let's do microfilm? More plausible small folded archival paper with bank vault key number. But physical bracelet can hold tiny strip.

Claire had placed a narrow strip of photographic film inside hollow bracelet link.

Before confrontation, she photographed study doorway using old analog micro-camera? Too contrived.

Better bracelet itself had caught something: hidden voice recorder? Too tech.

Maybe "inside" means engraved inner plate beneath removable clasp: the name of a private archive and box number where she stored security footage. This is proof indirectly.

Claire had modified bracelet clasp with tiny compartment containing a brass locker token marked 614.

Locker 614 at Carter Family Archive.

Only Claire knew.

The person who stole original bracelet unknowingly took key to evidence.

Whoever possessed it could access locker.

Had anyone?

Archive logs showed Locker 614 opened five months ago.

Credential:

Graham Voss.

But Graham denied through Evan? Need find him.

Police located Graham at motel.

He surrendered.

He admitted opening locker.

Using Claire’s bracelet.

So he possessed original.

Why?

Because he was man who entered passage?

“No.”

He said Claire gave bracelet to him after injury.

Claire on phone said:

“That’s a lie.”

Now direct conflict.

One of them was lying.

Graham looked shattered.

“Claire doesn't remember.”

Claire snapped:

“I remember enough.”

Graham said locker contained video from study.

He opened it with Claire’s permission two months after disappearance.

Video showed who entered after Vanessa.

Graham refused to identify person unless Daniel promised children protected first.

Daniel stood.

“Stop bargaining with my family.”

Graham finally gave name.

May you like

“Evan.”

His own son.
