Chapter 8 - David and Thomas

David had always been told he and Michael were healthy children.

Their mother, Evelyn Bennett, died from cancer when David was twenty.

No reason to suspect childhood study.

Independent medical review found no evidence David currently suffered related illness.

That mattered.

Story was not becoming hidden diagnosis.

It was becoming hidden consent.

Records showed William Bennett’s home research program was run by Dr. Arthur Kessler.

Kessler died eight years earlier.

Purpose:

Study genetic susceptibility to industrial solvent exposure.

Participants included exposed workers, relatives, and community controls.

Problem was consent forms.

Several were forged.

Thomas Vale’s signature appeared.

He was sixteen.

Parental consent supposedly Margaret Vale.

Margaret denied ever signing.

David’s childhood forms bore Evelyn Bennett’s signature.

Michael said handwriting looked wrong.

Claire remembered hidden object.

“Could capsule contain originals?”

Microfilm was incomplete.

Brass wafer authenticated encrypted archive.

Independent forensic system opened it.

Scans appeared.

Original sample chain.

Thomas Vale.

David Bennett.

Michael Bennett.

Others.

Then a note from William dated years later:

KESSLER ALTERED GROUP ASSIGNMENTS.

What did that mean?

Researchers categorized exposed vs controls incorrectly?

Potentially deliberately.

If so, study conclusions unreliable.

Why hide?

Bennett Meridian later used Kessler study to argue some illnesses were hereditary rather than caused by factory exposure.

That could reduce liability.

Now stakes became clear.

File Nine might undermine decades-old settlements and corporate defenses.

Not because $38.4M could be stolen.

Because reserve might be insufficient if historical claims reopened.

Current company could face massive reputational and legal exposure.

Who wanted File Nine destroyed?

Someone protecting company.

Claire looked like convenient scapegoat.

Emma’s identity convenient digital camouflage.

Michael convenient fugitive.

David convenient badge source.

Then Helen Ward, compliance officer, disappeared from office.

Her desk had been cleared.

Security found shredded notes.

One readable line:

CAST RECOVERED?

David stared.

Helen knew about cast.

How?

Claire swore she told nobody.

Michael swore same.

Emma had been home.

Noah couldn't.

Then Emma quietly said:

“I told someone.”

David turned.

“Who?”

“Lady on Claire’s phone.”

Claire looked confused.

“What lady?”

Emma described video call while Claire constructed cast.

A woman called.

Claire stepped away.

Emma answered accidentally.

Woman saw cast.

Asked what happened.

Emma said:

“Claire put something inside.”

Claire’s face changed.

She checked call history.

No call.

Deleted remotely?

Then Emma described woman.

Short gray hair.

Red glasses.

Michael whispered:

“Helen Ward.”

Emma shook head.

“No.”

“Not Helen?”

“No.”

She pointed at old Bennett family photograph on wall.

“That lady.”

David followed finger.

His stomach dropped.

Emma was pointing at Evelyn Bennett.

May you like

David’s mother.

A woman who had been dead for nineteen years.
