Chapter 12 - What Claire Signed
Claire remembered.
Prenuptial paperwork.
Dozens of documents.
David’s attorney had presented family-governance acknowledgments.
Claire signed several.
One appointed her successor observer administrator if David became incapacitated.
She had not understood dormant descendant profiles could be accessed through role.
Was she careless?
Yes.
Was she mastermind?
Evidence said no.
Someone used legitimate authority she unknowingly possessed.
Who prepared documents?
David’s longtime family attorney:
Peter Sloan.
Rebecca Sloan? No relation. Keep simple.
Peter Sloan had represented William before death.
He was seventy-four.
Retired.
When contacted, he admitted clause.
“William required spouses of Bennett descendants to be emergency observers.”
“Why?”
“To prevent company insiders from controlling family records.”
Ironically mechanism became attack route.
Who knew Claire held access?
Peter.
David.
Corporate governance office.
Michael possibly from old documents.
Helen possibly through compliance.
Too many suspects.
Then Claire remembered Michael’s meeting.
He did not simply hand capsule over.
He said:
“Your name opens what David’s can't.”
At time she thought metaphor.
Now David confronted Michael.
“You knew Claire had authority.”
Michael admitted.
“Yes.”
“Then why use Emma?”
“I didn't.”
“You handed Claire capsule knowing she could access descendant system.”
“Yes.”
“Were you trying to force File Nine open?”
“I was trying to keep it from destruction.”
Claire’s cast was her own terrible improvisation.
Not Michael’s instruction.
So central act had layers:
Michael stole/recovered capsule.
Claire hid it around Emma.
Someone else already used Emma’s identity months earlier.
Those were separate actions converging on child.
Then Peter Sloan found William’s original governance memo.
It contained sentence omitted from current corporate copy:
FIRST DESCENDANT BORN AFTER AMENDMENT SHALL RECEIVE SEALED BENEFICIARY NOTICE UPON AGE SEVEN.
Emma had turned seven four months earlier.
No notice arrived.
Where was it?
Archive showed delivered.
Signed for by:
C. Bennett.
Claire denied.
Security footage from delivery date showed package taken by woman wearing courier uniform.
Face obscured.
Plate traced to rental under fake ID.
Someone intercepted Emma’s notice.
Why?
Peter explained notice did not grant money.
It disclosed existence of special reserve and claimant archive.
A transparency safeguard.
William wanted next generation told truth eventually.
Someone did not.
Then police recovered rental-car camera footage.
Woman removed cap briefly.
Michael recognized her.
“That's Claire Mercer.”
The former Kessler lab technician.
But Mercer had just told them she wanted truth exposed.
Why steal Emma’s notice?
When confronted, Mercer disappeared.
Her house was empty.
On kitchen table:
Emma’s unopened seventh-birthday beneficiary notice.
And beneath it—
May you like
a second titanium capsule.
Identical to one hidden inside cast.
