Chapter 4 - The Titanium Capsule
Police were not called immediately.
David hated that decision.
But he contacted private attorney and independent security consultant, both outside Bennett Meridian.
Emma and Noah were moved temporarily to David’s sister’s home under professional security.
Claire was not allowed to accompany them.
David made that boundary clear.
Whatever her motive, she had placed Emma in danger and lied about injury.
Claire accepted it.
“I deserve that.”
David did not answer.
The titanium capsule was opened under camera with attorney present.
Inside were three things.
A brass authentication wafer.
A microfilm strip.
And a small silver key stamped:
David expected millions.
Instead key opened a safe-deposit box registered to Bennett Family Foundation.
Box contained no cash.
Only records.
Old board minutes.
Property deeds.
Insurance schedules.
Employee medical files.
Then David found spreadsheet.
Thirty-eight million dollars had indeed existed.
But it had not vanished.
Most remained in restricted reserve managed through independent trustees.
The scandal was not stolen fortune.
It was why reserve existed.
Twenty-three years earlier, Bennett Meridian manufactured industrial insulation containing chemical additive later linked to neurological illness after prolonged exposure.
Company settled worker claims quietly.
William Bennett established reserve.
So why hide documents?
Some settlements were legitimate.
Others were not.
Several claimants received unusually large confidential payments.
One name appeared repeatedly:
MARGARET VALE.
Claire saw it and went pale.
David noticed.
“You know her.”
“No.”
“You reacted.”
“I know the surname.”
“From where?”
Claire hesitated.
“My mother.”
David stared.
Claire’s maiden name was Claire Lawson.
“My mother’s birth name was Vale.”
Silence.
David looked back at file.
Margaret Vale received $1.6 million over fourteen years.
Was Claire related?
Claire insisted she had never heard of Margaret.
Then attorney found birth record.
Margaret Vale had one son.
Thomas Vale.
Claire’s mother had a younger brother named Thomas.
Claire sat down.
“My uncle disappeared when I was a kid.”
Suddenly Claire’s connection to Bennett Meridian predated marriage.
Had she married David deliberately?
Claire looked horrified by implication.
“I didn't know.”
David wanted believe her.
Then microfilm was developed.
It contained photograph from twenty-three years earlier.
William Bennett.
Michael, then teenager.
A younger woman David recognized as Claire’s mother, Susan Lawson.
And beside Susan—
a boy of approximately sixteen.
On back:
THOMAS VALE — DO NOT RELEASE FILE 9 TO HIS FAMILY.
Claire whispered:
“Why was my mother meeting your father?”
Before David could answer, attorney turned over photograph.
A second handwritten note:
IF DAVID EVER MARRIES SUSAN’S DAUGHTER, TELL HIM THE TRUTH BEFORE THEY HAVE CHILDREN.
David and Claire stared at each other.
Upstairs, Emma was asleep.
