Chapter 6 - Emma Bennett, Authorized Signatory
It sounded ridiculous.
A seven-year-old could not legally authorize corporate destruction.
And she had not.
The profile was fraudulent.
Someone used Emma’s identity as camouflage inside archival system.
Her date of birth became credential seed.
Her name was attached to a dormant family account no active auditor routinely reviewed.
Claire’s profile was spoofed too.
So Claire had not ordered File Nine destroyed.
That weakened theory she was mastermind.
But why use Emma?
Because system automatically categorized descendants of William Bennett into family-governance archive.
David demanded internal logs.
Bennett Meridian’s chief compliance officer, Helen Ward, resisted.
“Those archives are sealed.”
“My daughter’s identity was used.”
That ended argument.
Logs showed fraudulent profile created from terminal in executive records wing.
Badge access:
David Bennett.
David had been in Chicago that day.
His badge had not been reported stolen.
Clone.
Someone was framing entire family.
Then Michael returned.
He met David at attorney’s office.
Brothers stared at each other for first time in twelve years.
Michael looked older.
Not broken.
Just tired.
He explained $840,000.
William had discovered settlement reserve being drained through consulting fees.
He moved remaining accessible amount temporarily.
Michael helped.
Board discovered transfer before William could explain.
William told Michael to disappear with copies because one director had threatened expose Thomas Vale’s medical records and other claimant identities.
Michael obeyed.
Why stay gone after William died?
Fear.
And shame.
Again no heroic excuse.
He could have returned.
He did not.
“I wasted twelve years because Dad taught me secrecy was protection.”
David understood more than he wanted.
Then Michael looked at Claire.
“You shouldn't have put capsule on Emma.”
Claire:
“I know.”
“You endangered her.”
“I know.”
No excuse.
Then David asked:
“Why did you give it to Claire?”
“Because someone followed me from vault.”
“Why not me?”
“Your office was compromised.”
“Why trust Claire?”
Michael looked at her.
“Because Susan’s daughter was supposed to have second key.”
Claire frowned.
“What second key?”
Michael produced old letter from William.
SUSAN HOLDS VALE KEY.
BENNETT KEY REMAINS FILE 9.
BOTH REQUIRED BEFORE ORIGINAL MEDICAL INDEX CAN BE OPENED.
Claire called mother.
Susan admitted she had key.
For twenty-three years.
She had never used it.
Because Thomas asked her not to.
“Why?”
Susan whispered:
“He said if two keys ever came together, somebody would finally learn why he got sick.”
Claire asked:
“Isn't that already obvious? Exposure?”
“No.”
Susan’s voice trembled.
“Thomas was never exposed at factory.”
Everyone stopped.
“Then why did Bennett Meridian pay him?”
