Chapter 14 - The Cast Was a Message

Claire had built cast herself.
That fact remained.
No hidden mastermind forced her hand.
But someone manipulated circumstances that led her there.
Michael was lured to Emma’s school by anonymous message.
Claire was lured there separately.
A black SUV appeared at exact moment Michael handed capsule over.
Claire panicked.
She took Emma home.
Why did she choose cast?
Because orthopedic charity supplies were already in garage.
Who had delivered those supplies?
Bennett Meridian community foundation.
Delivery moved forward two days unexpectedly.
Who authorized change?
Emma’s fraudulent profile.
Someone used child’s identity to alter a charity delivery containing precisely materials Claire later used.
That was planning.
Not certainty—but behavioral prediction.
Whoever orchestrated events knew Claire was protective, improvisational, distrustful of police.
Knew David would come home at 5:30.
Knew Emma would tell truth.
Knew David would cut cast.
And knew capsule would reach him without corporate security intercepting it.
The oversized cast was not merely hiding place.
It was delivery system.
Claire had unknowingly completed someone else’s plan.
David felt sick.
“Who knows us that well?”
Thomas Vale refused answer over phone.
“Come to Richmond.”
Claire asked:
“Is my mother with you?”
“Yes.”
Susan had known more than admitted.
They traveled with attorneys and detective.
Emma remained safe with David’s sister, away from investigation.
Thomas Vale met them in private law office.
He was alive.
No dramatic fake death—family had simply lost contact after he moved abroad under own name, later used middle name professionally.
He had spent years helping environmental-health nonprofits.
He explained File Nine.
After illness, he discovered truth gradually.
William apologized privately.
Thomas refused public war while other claimants’ medical care depended on reserve.
Instead he demanded governance reform.
Two-key systems.
Independent trustees.
Future descendant notice.
Emma became first child triggering transparency provision.
Someone inside Bennett Meridian panicked when notice generated.
They activated her dormant profile and intercepted package.
Who?
Thomas placed missing notebook page on table.
Present during Thomas’s wrong challenge dose:
Dr. Arthur Kessler.
Claire Mercer.
Evelyn Bennett.
Michael Bennett.
And—
William Bennett.
No mystery person.
No hidden villain on page.
David frowned.
“Then what are we missing?”
Thomas turned page.
On reverse was Kessler’s note:
SUBJECT SWITCH REQUESTED BEFORE SESSION.
REQUEST SOURCE: W.B.
David went pale.
“My father ordered Thomas switched?”
Thomas shook head.
“That's what it looks like.”
“But?”
“W.B. wasn't William Bennett.”
Claire leaned forward.
Thomas placed old corporate directory beside note.
Two people had initials W.B.
William Bennett.
And Wendy Brooks.
Bennett Meridian’s research administrator.
Wendy Brooks disappeared from company one week after incident.
David had never heard name.
“Where is she?”
Thomas looked at Claire.
“Ask your mother.”
Susan entered room.
She looked devastated.
Claire stood.
“Mom?”
Susan whispered:
“Wendy Brooks was the woman who hired me at Bennett Meridian.”
“You worked there?”
“For six months.”
“You told me you never did.”
“I lied.”
“Why?”
Susan looked at David.
“Because Wendy wasn't just administrator.”
“What was she?”
Susan said:
“She was Emma’s grandmother.”
Silence.
Claire stared.
“My mother is standing right here.”
Susan shook head.
“Not through you.”
David stopped breathing.
His mother Evelyn was supposedly his maternal line.
Wendy Brooks could only be Emma’s grandmother through—
Andrew? No, wrong family. Through David's biological parentage? This risks cheap parentage retcon. Better: step/biological via Emma’s deceased mother? But Emma's stepmother is Claire, so Emma’s biological mother is absent/unmentioned. Yes.
Susan clarified before anyone could misunderstand.
“Emma’s biological mother.”
David’s face changed.
Emma’s mother, Rachel Bennett, had died four years earlier in a documented car accident.
Rachel’s mother had always been listed as Patricia Cole.
Thomas shook head.
“Patricia raised Rachel.”
Susan whispered:
“Wendy gave birth to her.”
David stared at notebook.
For first time, Emma’s specific selection made sense.
Not because she was merely a Bennett descendant.
May you like
She was also Wendy Brooks’s biological granddaughter.
And someone had just used Emma’s identity to reopen the only file capable of proving what Wendy did.
