Chapter 7 - The Basement Clinic

William Bennett’s old house had been sold ten years earlier.
New owners allowed inspection after court order.
Basement had been renovated.
But architectural plans showed something unusual.
A medical room.
Not hospital-grade.
Small examination suite installed during 1990s.
William had funded occupational-health research from home annex before company built clinic.
Thomas Vale had visited house three times.
Why?
Susan finally told truth she had carried for decades.
Thomas developed tremors, fainting episodes, and severe headaches at sixteen.
Susan believed workplace exposure.
But Thomas insisted he had never entered contaminated factory area.
He had attended paid youth medical study.
Where?
William Bennett’s house.
Company doctor tested family members and community volunteers for “environmental sensitivity.”
Thomas participated for $200.
The program was supposedly observational.
Then he became ill.
Records disappeared.
William paid family.
Margaret accepted money because Thomas needed treatment.
So reserve covered more than industrial exposure.
It covered research participants.
Potentially unauthorized experimental exposure?
Not proven.
David refused to assume.
They needed records.
Two keys opened medical index stored separately in foundation archive.
Inside were 31 participant codes.
No names.
One code highlighted:
V-17.
Another:
B-02.
Michael stared.
“B could be Bennett.”
Maybe.
Then Claire found participant age list.
V-17 — male, 16.
Likely Thomas.
B-02 — male, 15.
Michael had been fifteen.
He looked stunned.
“I never participated.”
David asked:
“Are you sure?”
Michael became angry.
“I'd remember.”
Would he?
The program included routine blood draws during annual family physicals.
Could samples have been used without clear consent?
Possible.
Then one more code:
B-03 — male, 11.
David had been eleven.
His face drained.
Claire looked at him.
“You too?”
“I don't remember any study.”
Index suggested both Bennett sons had samples collected.
Not necessarily experimental treatment.
The mystery deepened.
Then attorney found financial note:
V-17 adverse event.
B-02 control mismatch.
B-03 excluded.
Preserve maternal samples.
Maternal samples.
Whose?
Thomas’s mother?
David’s mother?
Then Dr. Monroe called.
She had reviewed Emma’s fake cast photographs.
Something bothered her.
Inside plaster, around titanium capsule, was layer of old medical gauze.
Not from Claire’s supplies.
Claire had wrapped capsule exactly as Michael gave it.
Meaning gauze was already there.
Laboratory dated adhesive decades old.
On gauze was faded handwriting:
V-17.
The capsule had once been packaged with Thomas Vale’s medical material.
And beneath label was second code.
May you like
B-03.
David’s childhood participant number.
