Chapter 3 - The Man in the Photograph

Michael Bennett was not legally dead.

But to David, he might as well have been.

Twelve years earlier, Michael vanished after being accused of stealing $840,000 from their father’s company.

No body.

No confirmed death.

Just abandoned car near Canadian border and a note:

DON’T LOOK FOR ME.

Their father, William Bennett, refused to press charges publicly.

David assumed shame.

Michael became forbidden subject.

Now photograph showed him less than twenty feet behind Emma.

Older.

Bearded.

Alive.

David confronted Claire.

“You've seen Michael.”

Claire looked exhausted.

“Yesterday.”

“Before or after you put Emma in that cast?”

“After.”

“Stop lying.”

“I’m not.”

Claire said she received anonymous message asking her to meet near Emma’s school.

She went because message contained photograph of David entering Meridian vault.

At meeting, Michael appeared.

He carried titanium capsule.

He told Claire men were watching house and capsule could not remain with any adult connected to Bennett Meridian.

Then why Emma?

Claire claimed she refused.

Michael insisted nobody would search child.

Claire refused again.

Then a black SUV appeared.

Michael panicked.

He handed Claire capsule and disappeared.

Claire took Emma home.

What happened next was Claire’s decision.

She constructed oversized removable cast using emergency orthopedic supplies stored from charity event she organized.

She told Emma they were playing a “safety game.”

When Emma became frightened and asked why, Claire lied.

“You fell.”

Then she warned Emma not to let David remove it until Claire could decide whom to trust.

David was furious.

“You used my daughter as a hiding place.”

“I was scared.”

“You could have called police.”

“Michael said police contact would trigger whoever was watching.”

“You believed a fugitive?”

Claire’s eyes filled.

“I believed what he showed me.”

“What?”

“A page from your father’s ledger.”

She retrieved photograph from phone.

William Bennett’s handwriting.

MERIDIAN RESERVE — $38,400,000.

TRANSFER AUTHORITY REQUIRES PHYSICAL KEY + TWO FAMILY SIGNATURES.

David stared.

The capsule was not money.

It might contain key controlling money.

But why hide it for eight years?

Then David noticed something.

Two family signatures.

One listed:

WILLIAM BENNETT.

Second had been blacked out.

David zoomed in.

Only bottom of letters remained.

They looked like:

M. BEN—

Michael?

Maybe.

Then Emma appeared in doorway.

“Dad?”

David turned.

She held tiny folded note.

“It fell out of cast.”

David opened it.
