Chapter 1 - The Cast That Was Too Big

David Bennett knew something was wrong before Emma finished her first sentence.

He had just stepped into the bright living room of his suburban home, black work bag still in his hand. Two-year-old Noah sat quietly on the rug with a wooden train.

Then David saw his daughter.

Emma sat several feet away, crying so hard her shoulders shook.

One leg stretched awkwardly in front of her.

A thick white cast covered it from below her knee almost to her toes.

David dropped his bag.

“Emma—what happened?”

He crossed the room and crouched directly in front of her.

Emma’s blonde hair stuck to her wet cheeks.

David looked at the cast.

No signatures.

No hospital logo.

No discharge bracelet.

Nothing.

“Where’s Claire?”

Emma wiped her face.

“Upstairs.”

“What happened to your leg?”

“Claire said I fell.”

David frowned.

“You said?”

Emma looked directly at him.

“I never fell, Dad.”

The room seemed to shrink.

David’s jaw tightened.

He reached toward the cast.

Emma immediately grabbed his wrist.

“Don’t take it off.”

“Why?”

Her fingers trembled around him.

“She said you’d find it.”

David stopped.

“Find what?”

Emma shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

David looked again.

And finally noticed what his panic had hidden from him.

The cast was enormous.

Too wide around Emma’s calf. Too bulky around her ankle. It looked less like something molded around an injured leg and more like something constructed around it.

David pressed gently against one side.

Something moved.

Not Emma’s leg.

Something else.

Solid.

A faint metallic clink came from inside.

Emma began sobbing harder.

David grabbed the small oscillating cast saw from the medical bag sitting beside the sofa—another detail that made no sense. He switched it on and carefully cut along the outer plaster shell.

A narrow opening appeared.

Something gleamed inside.

Metal.

David widened the cut just enough to see its edge.

Then his face changed.

The saw fell from his hand.

Because whatever Claire had hidden around his seven-year-old daughter’s leg—

David had seen it before.

Twenty-four hours earlier.

And that vault had been reported empty that morning.
