Chapter 3 - The Wrong Question
Eleanor seized on sentence.
“That is what I meant.”
Victor stared.
“You kicked a six-year-old because of an anonymous photocopy?”
“It confirms what I always suspected.”
“What?”
Eleanor hesitated.
“Anna wasn't your biological daughter.”
Silence.
Claire expected Victor to explode.
Instead, he became very still.
Because apparently that possibility was not entirely new.
Thirty-three years earlier Victor’s wife, Catherine, gave birth during emergency at Whitmore Memorial Hospital.
Anna was premature.
Catherine nearly died.
Victor remembered being shown daughter only briefly before she was moved to neonatal unit.
There had been administrative confusion that night because another infant girl shared surname beginning with W.
But DNA?
Anna had never been tested against Victor.
There had been no reason.
Lily’s test confirmed Lily belonged to Anna.
It said nothing about Anna’s relationship to Victor.
Eleanor knew old rumor.
Their mother once claimed hospital “gave Victor the wrong baby.”
Everyone dismissed it as dementia years later.
Now File 614 revived it.
Victor ordered legitimate kinship testing using preserved Anna medical sample and his own DNA.
Result arrived urgently through family attorney next day.
Probability Victor was Anna’s biological father:
99.99%.
Eleanor stared.
“So document is false.”
Not necessarily.
Because sentence did not say Victor wasn't Anna’s father.
It said Anna was never supposed to be a Whitmore.
Different meaning.
Claire saw it first.
“This isn't about biology.”
Victor reread.
Maybe “Whitmore” referred to legal family status.
Trust eligibility.
Name.
Guardianship.
Something else.
Then investigators examined File 614 photocopy.
Paper modern.
Content reproduced from older typewritten document.
Archive numbering system genuine.
Signature:
Catherine Whitmore.
Victor’s late wife.
At bottom:
I REQUEST THAT ANNA’S PATERNAL REGISTRATION REMAIN SEALED UNTIL HER THIRTY-FIFTH BIRTHDAY.
Victor stared.
“Paternal?”
He was father.
Why seal paternal registration?
Then another line:
LEGAL FATHER OF RECORD: VICTOR WHITMORE.
BIOLOGICAL PATERNITY: CONFIRMED.
So again—not paternity.
Then what was sealed?
A second category:
PATERNAL HOUSEHOLD DESIGNATION.
Code:
W-2.
Victor had never heard it.
Eleanor had.
Her face betrayed her.
Victor looked up.
“What is W-2?”
