Chapter 11 - Gabriel

Claire stared.

“Cross?”

Gabriel Cross was Julian’s younger brother.

He and Anna had dated privately.

Why had nobody told Claire?

Anna ended relationship during pregnancy.

Victor claimed Gabriel was Lily’s father.

Had DNA confirmed?

Yes.

Privately.

So Lily was biologically:

Anna Whitmore’s daughter.

Victor’s granddaughter.

Catherine’s great-granddaughter.

And Gabriel Cross’s daughter.

She belonged to both Whitmore and Cross lines.

That was what only Anna and Victor knew.

Eleanor’s dinner declaration implied she had learned Gabriel’s identity.

Who told her?

Anonymous packet.

A hidden page included paternity record.

That was why Victor asked “Who told you?”

Eleanor had impossible knowledge because someone accessed Anna’s sealed paternity file.

Why did Eleanor say Lily had no right in family?

She misinterpreted legal memo claiming Lily’s Cross paternal rights created conflict with Whitmore trust.

Her prejudice and anger converted a governance issue into rejection of child.

Again: Eleanor culpable, but source manipulated her.

Where was Gabriel?

Dead?

No.

Alive.

Forty.

Living in Seattle.

Why absent?

Anna requested no contact after discovering Gabriel had secretly shared her pregnancy data with Julian during Ward 2 investigation.

Gabriel said he did it because he suspected Anna and he were related through Catherine/Miriam line.

Were they?

Genetic testing showed no prohibited close relationship.

Gabriel was collateral Cross relative several generations removed from Miriam, while Anna descended directly from Catherine. No dangerous revelation.

But Anna felt betrayed.

After Lily’s birth, Gabriel sought parental rights.

Before hearing, Anna died.

Victor and Gabriel reached confidential agreement:

Gabriel would undergo counseling, establish stability and have gradual contact later.

Then Gabriel disappeared from process.

Why?

He received threat:

PURSUE LILY AND FILE 614 BECOMES PUBLIC.

From whom?

Unknown.

He assumed Victor.

Victor denied.

Gabriel believed him now.

Threat metadata traced to mansion network.

Six years ago.

Someone inside house pushed Lily’s father away.

Eleanor?

She denied.

Then Gabriel produced envelope received yesterday.

Same anonymous sender.

COME HOME. LILY TURNS SIX. THE AUDIT STARTS.

So someone was summoning every relevant person at once.

Julian.

Martin.

Gabriel.

Eleanor.

All toward File 614.

Why?

Then Victor’s attorney discovered scheduled $11.8M transfer was never intended to complete.

It was bait.

Someone wanted signatures, access attempts and accusations documented.

Claire whispered:

“Someone is recreating Anna’s investigation.”

Victor looked at daughter’s old letter.

Or finishing it.
