Chapter 2 - Anna’s Last Secret
Anna Whitmore had been Victor’s only daughter.
She died six years earlier, three weeks after Lily was born.
That much was certain.
There had been no missing body.
No secret disappearance.
No ambiguous hospital record.
Anna died in a verified highway accident outside Boston.
Victor identified her.
Claire attended funeral.
Eleanor did too.
Lily had been an infant.
Claire was Anna’s closest friend and Lily’s legal guardian.
Victor had supported them ever since.
But there was one secret.
Three days before her death, Anna asked Victor for a private meeting.
She brought sealed envelope.
“If anything happens to me, Lily cannot be treated as a Whitmore heir until this is resolved.”
Victor was stunned.
“Why?”
Anna would not explain fully.
She only said:
“Because the family record may be wrong.”
Victor demanded whether Lily was biologically hers.
Anna became furious.
“She is my daughter.”
“Then what record?”
Anna refused.
Victor locked envelope in private safe.
After Anna died, grief overwhelmed everything.
DNA testing was performed quietly.
Lily was Anna’s biological child.
That question ended.
But envelope contained a handwritten instruction:
DO NOT PLACE LILY INTO THE WHITMORE FAMILY TRUST UNTIL YOU FIND FILE 614.
Victor searched.
No File 614 existed in family office.
He told no one.
Not Claire.
Not trustees.
Especially not Eleanor.
Yet tonight Eleanor had declared Lily had “no right” to family.
Claire listened in disbelief.
“You kept this from me?”
“I was protecting Lily.”
“You were deciding for her.”
Victor accepted rebuke.
Then Claire asked Eleanor:
“What do you know about File 614?”
Eleanor’s expression changed.
Nothing more needed saying.
She knew.
Victor stepped closer.
“How?”
“I received something.”
“When?”
“Yesterday.”
From whom?
No sender.
An envelope had been delivered by courier.
Inside was one photocopied document.
Eleanor retrieved it from purse.
At top:
WHITMORE FAMILY ARCHIVE — FILE 614.
Below:
ANNA WHITMORE MATERNITY REVIEW.
Victor’s pulse jumped.
Then Claire saw handwritten note at bottom.

LILY IS ANNA’S CHILD.
BUT ANNA WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO BE A WHITMORE.
