Chapter 14 - Before Dinner

Claire crouched beside Lily.

“Did the woman tell you her name?”

“No.”

“What did she look like?”

“Like Grandma, but not Grandma.”

Older woman.

Silver hair.

Champagne suit.

Pearls.

Deliberate imitation.

She told Lily:

“If Eleanor says you don't belong, don't cry. Look at her.”

That explained Lily’s eerie calm at end.

She had been prepared.

By whom?

Security cameras showed woman arriving as catering guest.

Face captured.

Victor did not recognize her.

Eleanor did.

“Melissa.”

Not assistant Melissa Grant.

Melissa Hale.

Martin Hale’s older sister.

Catherine’s adoptive sister.

Seventy-three.

She had not been seen by Whitmores in decades.

Why impersonate Eleanor?

Police found her at nearby hotel.

She cooperated.

Melissa admitted dressing similarly deliberately.

She wanted Lily to notice Eleanor’s cruelty?

More than that.

She wanted Victor to witness exactly how Eleanor reacted to paternity information.

Melissa had intercepted Julian’s package?

Yes.

She replaced pages.

She created anonymous summary.

She used Eleanor’s hardware token?

Yes.

How?

Martin had old duplicate office key and Melissa borrowed it without telling him.

She staged transfer authorization knowing Rebecca’s audit would block actual movement.

Why orchestrate confrontation?

Because she believed Eleanor had been responsible for threatening Gabriel six years ago.

Was she?

Eleanor denied.

Melissa wanted force her into revealing knowledge publicly.

Reckless.

Manipulative.

She put Lily at emotional risk.

But did she know Eleanor would kick chair?

“No.”

She expected verbal rejection.

Not physical act.

Claire was furious.

“You used my child to test an adult.”

Melissa lowered eyes.

“Yes.”

Why?

Because Catherine had told Melissa before death:

“Eleanor knows who threatened Gabriel.”

Did Eleanor?

Yes.

Finally.

She knew.

Who?

Not herself.

Arthur Whitmore?

Dead before Lily’s birth.

No.

Victor?

No.

Catherine?

She was alive then but loved Anna.

Then Eleanor said:

“Anna.”

Silence.

Anna herself sent threat to Gabriel.

Why?

After he shared pregnancy data with Julian, Anna wanted him away while she investigated.

She fabricated threat making it seem File 614 would be exposed.

Victor stared.

“My daughter threatened Lily’s father?”

“To keep him from custody fight until she understood whether his family was exploiting trust.”

Again protective secrecy.

Again harmful.

Anna later regretted it.

Her scheduled letters were attempt to repair.

Melissa discovered truth in Catherine papers and believed Eleanor was hiding it.

She was.

Why?

To protect Anna’s memory.

Then Claire asked:

“So what exactly terrified you when you looked at Lily?”

Eleanor’s answer returned to crescent mark and Anna’s instruction.

But there was more.

“The way she looked at me.”

“What about it?”

“Anna told me Lily would know when I lied.”

Claire almost dismissed it as sentiment.

Then Eleanor produced unopened second page of Anna’s letter.

On it:

IF LILY STOPS CRYING AND LOOKS DIRECTLY AT YOU, SHE HAS ALREADY HEARD MY RECORDING.

Claire frowned.

“What recording?”

Lily quietly reached into pocket.

A tiny old audio player.

Melissa had given it to her before dinner.

Claire’s anger flared again.

“What did you make her listen to?”

Lily pressed play.

Anna’s voice:

“Lily, if you're hearing this, someone has told you that you don't belong.”

Everyone went silent.

“You do.”

Eleanor began crying.

Then Anna:

“And if Aunt Eleanor says otherwise, ask her what happened on the night I was born.”

Victor turned slowly toward sister.

Eleanor whispered:

“No.”

The central mystery had almost been solved.

But Anna had left one last question.

May you like

Not about Lily’s birth.

About her own.
