Chapter 10 - The Hale Claim

Martin Hale was seventy-one.

Retired.

He had known Catherine since childhood.

He was not biological brother but grew up with her.

Victor had trusted him for decades.

Why sneak into mansion?

Martin denied.

Security footage showed him entering service gate using old access code.

Confronted, he admitted.

He wanted Eleanor’s hardware token.

Why?

To stop transfer.

Not authorize it.

He claimed someone was attempting move Ward 2 assets before Lily’s audit.

Who?

Julian Cross.

Julian denied.

Now two older family branches accused each other.

Cross descendants believed Hales benefited from improper adoption.

Hales believed Cross family wanted Catherine’s assets after abandoning her.

Truth was more complicated.

Miriam Cross requested temporary placement because severe postpartum illness made infant care unsafe temporarily.

Hales cared for Catherine lovingly.

Arthur Whitmore later pushed permanent adoption without valid consent because he believed stability mattered more than Miriam’s recovering wishes.

Robert Hale accepted finalization but evidence suggested he did not know consent forged.

So Hales were not kidnappers.

Cross family had not simply abandoned Catherine.

Arthur created injustice by overriding mother’s legal rights.

Ward 2 property shares were later placed partly in Catherine’s name as quiet compensation.

She discovered this as adult.

Rather than sue publicly, she negotiated protections.

That was why Anna inherited unresolved status.

Then why did Martin want Eleanor’s token?

He found proposed transfer.

He believed Eleanor authorized it.

He intended download evidence.

He did not get token.

Someone else did.

Who had been inside Eleanor’s office?

Camera disabled for seven minutes.

Mansion security log used Lily’s bedroom tablet to disable it.

Claire was furious.

Someone had used child’s device.

Tablet fingerprint log showed adult PIN entry.

Only Claire and Victor knew PIN.

Victor stared.

“I never used it.”

Claire hadn't either.

Who else could know?

Lily answered:

“Mommy.”

Anna had set tablet up years ago? Lily was newborn then, impossible current tablet. But Claire had reused Anna’s old four-digit family PIN when configuring it.

Who knew Anna’s PIN?

Eleanor.

Victor.

Claire.

And Anna’s former fiancé?

Claire frowned.

Anna had not been married when Lily born.

Lily’s father had been deliberately kept out of public story.

Victor’s face changed.

That was secret only Anna and Victor knew.

The secret Eleanor somehow seemed to know at dinner.

Claire whispered:

“Who was Lily’s father?”

Victor looked toward Eleanor.

May you like

Eleanor whispered one name.

“Gabriel Cross.”
