Chapter 9 - Project Eight
Project Eight sounded sinister because everyone had spent days assuming it was.
Actual history was more ordinary—and more troubling in a different way.
Twenty-five years earlier Bennett Foundation funded hereditary bleeding-risk study after several extended family members experienced surgical complications.
Eight volunteer families participated.
Ethan’s mother enrolled him as adolescent control.
No experimentation.
Blood samples and family histories.
Project ended legally.
Or supposedly.
Years later samples remained archived.
When Claire became pregnant, someone cross-referenced Ethan’s old sample without fresh consent.
Why?
To assess fetal clotting risk after Claire had unusual prenatal labs.
That could have been medically useful if done transparently.
Instead it happened through private foundation channel.
Marcus discovered unauthorized cross-reference.
He believed someone was using Sophie’s impending birth to validate old dataset.
The fake paternity report may have been generated accidentally—or deliberately—as side effect of manipulating family links.
So perhaps nobody was actually trying to break marriage.
Vanessa had simply exploited corrupted data.
Then Claire asked:
“Was Sophie ever in danger?”
Independent doctors reviewed.
No evidence Project Eight caused harm.
Sophie was healthy.
Claire’s postpartum hemorrhage had known obstetric cause and was treated.
Do not invent secret disease.
But someone had used Claire and Ethan’s genetic records without consent.
That was serious.
Who?
Database log:
User H.BENNETT.
Ethan’s father?
Henry Bennett.
Dead six years before Sophie born.
Old credential reused.
Who knew it?
Foundation genetics director.
Marcus Hale.
IT admin.
Ethan’s mother, Margaret Bennett.
Margaret was alive.
Seventy-two.
Ethan confronted her.
She denied.
Then admitted she knew Project Eight records still existed.
“Dad asked me to keep them sealed.”
“Why?”
“Because consent forms were incomplete.”
Did Margaret access them?
“No.”
Had she met Marcus before Sophie born?
“Yes.”
Two weeks earlier.
Marcus told her someone reopened Family Eight.
Margaret instructed him shut it down quietly.
Again secrecy.
Why not tell Ethan?
“I didn't want you frightened during Claire’s pregnancy.”
Pattern.
Everyone deciding what others should know.
Then Margaret said something about Vanessa.
“She called me.”
“When?”
“Night Sophie was born.”
Claire stared.
“What did she say?”
“She said Ethan was about to find out Claire had lied.”
Margaret immediately knew Vanessa was manipulating him.
She drove toward hotel.
Storm stopped her.
She called Ethan repeatedly.
No answer.
Then she called Marcus.
“Get that woman away from my son.”
Marcus went to hotel.
Security footage?
A man entered service corridor at 11:31.
Marcus.
So after Ethan left Room 814 the first time, Marcus met Vanessa.
What happened?
Vanessa refused to explain at first.
Then:
“He offered me money to leave.”
“How much?”
“Eighteen thousand.”
There.
The account.
Marcus created $18,000 payment in Vanessa’s name as settlement to make her leave and surrender report.
Vanessa refused.
Money never reached her.
Marcus routed it through hotel vendor after she rejected it to hide unauthorized payment attempt.
That explained financial clue.
But not who created fake report.

“I know who altered Family Eight. It isn't Vanessa. I think it began before Ethan met Claire.”
