Vanessa stopped breathing.
“My mother?”
Victoria Reed died when Vanessa was nineteen.
Vanessa had always known mother as elementary-school teacher.
No Bennett connection.
DNA suggested Victoria and Ethan shared meaningful biological relationship.
Likely half-siblings or aunt/nephew range initially.
Independent testing narrowed:
Victoria Reed was Ethan’s maternal half-sister.
That meant Margaret Bennett had another daughter.
Vanessa stared at Ethan’s mother.
Margaret began crying.
The truth was not dramatic affair during Ethan’s childhood.
It was older.
At seventeen Margaret gave birth to Victoria.
Her family arranged closed adoption.
Margaret later married Henry Bennett and had Ethan.
She never told him.
Victoria grew up Reed.
Had Vanessa.
Therefore Vanessa and Ethan were biologically—
aunt/nephew? Wait if Victoria is Ethan’s maternal half-sister, Vanessa is daughter of Ethan's half-sister, making Vanessa Ethan's half-niece. Alternative V-08 is Valerie Reed, Vanessa's late aunt, who was one of Project Eight families, not related to Ethan. Marcus used her profile as control. Vanessa's family connection is medical not biological. Let's correct.
Victoria Reed was not Vanessa’s mother; Vanessa’s mother was Laura Reed. Victoria was her aunt, one of Project Eight participants. No biological relation to Bennett family. The sealed legal request simply had same surname. Avoid blood relation.
Vanessa recognized name.
“Victoria was my aunt.”
Victoria Reed participated in Project Eight as member of Family Four, unrelated to Bennetts.
She had same clotting marker Claire later displayed.
How could that matter?
Marcus suspected unauthorized analyst had mixed Family Four and Family Eight sample identifiers.
That could generate false paternal incompatibility report if wrong control profile used.
So paternity scare may originate from data contamination rather than purposeful fake? But report identifiers manually changed. Someone then intentionally weaponized underlying mix-up.
Vanessa’s family happened to intersect project, giving her a reason someone selected her as messenger.
If she saw report, she might believe it because surname Reed appeared in audit trail.
Someone had studied emotional vulnerabilities:

Claire’s pregnancy.

They engineered maximum chaos.

Daniel Cross.

He retired five years ago.
Marcus’s voicemail included:
“Check Cross.”
Daniel Cross was alive.
When located, he immediately asked:
“Did Vanessa finally tell Ethan what she did with corrected report?”
He knew.
How?
Vanessa had called him four years earlier.
She wanted confirmation first report.
Cross told her it was false.
This was the “next afternoon” when she learned.
So Vanessa had knowingly concealed correction after speaking to Cross.
But Cross denied creating report.
He said someone accessed old system through his retired account.
Who?
No answer.
Then he added:
“The fake paternity report was not meant to make Ethan leave Claire.”
“Then what?”
“To make him open Henry Bennett’s sealed family file.”
Why would non-paternity scare lead there?
Because Henry’s estate instructions said:
OPEN FAMILY EIGHT FILE ONLY UPON PATERNITY DISPUTE INVOLVING DIRECT DESCENDANT.
