Chapter 7 - The Second Visit
Ethan denied it first.
Then hotel elevator records proved him wrong.
At 4:36 a.m., after Sophie’s birth, Ethan left St. Matthew.
At 4:52 he entered Grand Meridian.
At 5:21 he left.
Claire had been unconscious after postpartum hemorrhage.
Sophie was in nursery for observation.
Ethan had thirty-nine missing minutes.
“Why?”
He looked trapped by his own past.
“I went for the report.”
“Why not tell anyone?”
“I wasn't thinking.”
“You left me unconscious.”
“I was told you were stable.”
“You left Sophie.”
“She was with nurses.”
“To go meet Vanessa?”
“I didn't know if she was still there.”
Claire’s voice became low.
“But she was.”
“Yes.”
“What happened?”
Ethan said Vanessa had already seen correction notice through contact at Northbridge? Wait she said she learned next afternoon. Contradiction. So she couldn't know. Let's keep: Ethan went to find original fake report and figure out source. Vanessa was there. She told him unknown woman took envelope. He searched room. He and Vanessa argued.
Did they kiss?
Claire asked directly.
Ethan closed eyes.
“Yes.”
Silence.
Vanessa had not mentioned that.
“When?”
“In Room 814.”
“After Sophie was born?”
“Yes.”
Claire looked away.
“Did you sleep with her?”
“No.”
“Did you want to?”
“I was scared. Angry. Exhausted. She kissed me.”
“And?”
“I kissed her back for a few seconds.”
Claire’s eyes filled.
“You came from my hospital room while I was bleeding, kissed your ex, and then came back to me.”
“Yes.”
No justification.
No attempt to make it noble.
“I hated myself immediately.”
“Good.”
Claire stood.
Marriage had changed.
Whether it survived was no longer automatic.
Then Ethan explained why Vanessa believed promise romantic.
During second visit she said:
“If report was real, you'd have left Claire.”
Ethan answered:
“If Claire had lied about something that big, yes.”
“For me?”
Ethan, angry and confused, said:
“I don't know. Maybe. I thought I’d choose you.”
That was closer.
He had made emotionally intimate promise.
Not purely Vanessa invention.
But context still incomplete.
Vanessa asked him:
“And Sophie?”
Ethan reportedly answered:
“If Claire isn't who I think she is, I won't let her raise my child alone.”
Vanessa interpreted this as future family.
Ethan later regretted every word.
Then he found something behind hotel desk.
A torn piece of prenatal report envelope.
Stamped:
Bennett Foundation Medical Review.
Not Northbridge.
Someone inside his own family organization had handled report before Vanessa.
Who?
Four years ago Foundation medical liaison:
Dr. Marcus Hale.
Marcus was Claire’s obstetrician’s husband.
Not medical provider.
Conflict.
Marcus died two years ago.
Car accident, verified.
His old files stored Foundation archive.
Search uncovered payment three days before Sophie’s birth.
$18,000.
Consulting fee.
Recipient:
VANESSA REED LLC.
Vanessa stared when shown.
“I never got eighteen thousand dollars.”
Bank account existed.
Opened in her company’s name.
But not controlled by her.
