Chapter 13 - The Form With Vanessa’s Name
Investigators reconstructed St. Matthew audit.
Vanessa’s old credential generated form.
But IP address came from Grand Meridian event Wi-Fi.
Timestamp 9:31.
Who used terminal?
Hotel business center camera.
A woman.
Dark hair.
Foundation event badge.
Face partially hidden.
Claire recognized posture.
Vanessa.
Vanessa denied.
Then clothing comparison showed woman wearing Vanessa’s own black coat from earlier gala photos.
Vanessa stopped talking.
Claire:
“You generated it.”
Silence.
“You were preparing to become Sophie’s caregiver before I went into labor.”
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“Yes.”
Finally.
Why?
She knew Claire was full term.
She knew Ethan attending gala.
She rented next-door room deliberately.
She dreamed of forcing conversation.
She used old hospital marketing credentials that still worked to generate an unofficial emergency-care template.
Not legally valid.
A fantasy made document.
She typed her own name.
She imagined showing Ethan:
“If something happens, I can help.”
Then she became embarrassed and left form in printer.
Unknown hotel woman/Laura later picked it up with report materials and carried it into Room 814, thinking it belonged to case packet.
So eerie pre-generated form had ordinary but disturbing explanation:
Vanessa had created it herself out of obsession before labor began.
She lied because admitting that exposed how far obsession already went.
Ethan stared at her.
“You were planning a place in Sophie’s life before she was born.”
“I loved you.”
“No. You built a fantasy around me.”
Vanessa cried.
“You told me you'd choose me.”
“After you spent months trying to make sure I had a reason.”
Again central promise almost solved.
Then recovered hotel audio finally became usable.
Not entire twenty-seven minutes.
Four segments.
First:
Vanessa:
“If Claire has lied about whose baby this is, you can’t stay with her.”
Ethan:
“I know.”
Second:
Vanessa:
“Then choose.”
Ethan:
“If that report is real, and Claire knowingly lied to me about something this big, I’m leaving.”
Vanessa:
“With me?”
Long pause.
Ethan:
“I don’t know.”
Vanessa:
“You do.”
Third fragment:
Ethan:
“If everything you’re telling me is true… then I’ll choose you.”
There.
Exact line.
Then immediately:
“…to help me get Sophie somewhere safe until I know what Claire did.”
Claire stared.
Different meaning than romance—but still betrayal of trust.
He had contemplated removing newborn from Claire based on unverified report.
Then fourth fragment, later after Sophie birth:
Vanessa:
“You kissed me.”
Ethan:
“It was a mistake.”
Vanessa:
“You promised.”
Ethan:
“I promised nothing after I learned report was false.”
Vanessa:
“You said you'd choose me.”
Ethan:
“I was scared and furious and I said something unforgivable. But Sophie is Claire’s daughter, and I’m going back to my family.”
Audio ended.
Vanessa’s central weapon had context.
But Claire did not feel relieved.
Because Ethan had still said it.
Still considered taking Sophie away.
Still kissed Vanessa.
The truth made Vanessa less powerful—
not Ethan innocent.
Then final audio fragment surfaced.
A third voice.
Marcus Hale.
“Ethan, there's something else about Sophie’s file.”
Ethan:
“What?”
Marcus:
“The paternity report is fake. But somebody accessed her fetal sample for a different reason.”
“What reason?”
Marcus whispered:
“They were looking for Samuel Bennett’s marker.”
Claire stared at Ethan.
Samuel’s sample substitution again.
Why look for it in Sophie?
Because whoever accessed data believed Ethan’s old sample was Samuel’s and wanted to see whether marker appeared in Ethan’s child.
If Sophie lacked it, they could prove old profile wasn't Ethan.
So Sophie had been used as genetic verification tool without consent.
